Chapter 4

The heavy steel door of the stairwell swung open with a dry, metallic squeak that echoed loudly in the concrete stairwell. Elena winced, freezing in place for five agonizing seconds to listen for approaching footsteps above or below. Hearing nothing but the distant drone of the building's HVAC system, she maneuvered the baby bassinet across the raised threshold. The wheels bumped awkwardly over the concrete landing, threatening to wake Maya. Elena lifted the front end of the bassinet slightly, carrying the weight in her biceps as she began the harrowing descent down the winding staircase.

The stairwell was illuminated by wire-caged incandescent bulbs that cast harsh, yellowish light against the damp cinderblock walls. Each flight consisted of twenty steps, and by the time Elena reached the third landing, her breathing was coming in ragged gasps. Sweat rolled down her temples, stinging her eyes, but she refused to stop. Her bare feet felt cold against the dusty concrete, yet the physical discomfort was entirely eclipsed by the relentless terror pounding in her chest. She had to keep moving, driven by the memory of Evelyn’s discarded scrub jacket and the ominous files she had skimmed in the exam room.

Midway down the second flight, a sharp metallic clang echoed from the floor above. Someone had forced open the heavy fire door on the fourth-floor landing. Elena froze, pressing herself and the bassinet flat against the damp wall beneath the stairwell overhang. Heavy footsteps, confident and rhythmic, began descending the stairs with alarming speed. A deep, gruff voice muttered something into a portable radio, followed by static crackle and a chilling reply: "Sweep the lower levels. She can't have gotten far without an access card."

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. The footsteps were getting closer, echoing off the hard concrete surfaces with terrifying clarity. She looked around frantically for a place to hide. Beneath the stairwell architecture, a small utility alcove housed extra bags of rock salt and discarded janitorial equipment, shielded by a stained canvas curtain. Without hesitation, Elena ducked beneath the barrier, pulling the bassinet into the shadows just as a pair of polished black leather shoes appeared on the landing above.

Peering through a small tear in the canvas, Elena held her breath. A security guard in a dark uniform paused on the landing, his flashlight sweeping across the concrete steps. The beam cut through the dusty air, missing her hiding spot by mere inches. The guard cursed under his breath, tapped his radio to confirm the stairwell was clear, and continued his rapid descent toward the ground floor. Elena waited until the heavy metal door at the bottom of the stairwell slammed shut before letting out a trembling, silent sob of pure relief.
