Chapter 6

The executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Vance Global Industries was packed to capacity long before the emergency meeting was scheduled to begin. The heavy mahogany doors were shut tight, locking out the press corps and curious onlookers who had gathered in the lobby below. Richard Vance sat at the head of the long glass table, his face pale beneath his tan, his fingers gripping a stack of printed defense notes with white knuckles. Julian took his seat to his father's right, looking around the room at the tense faces of the senior board members. Whispers died down instantly as the digital projector at the end of the table flickered to life.
Before any board member could call the meeting to order, the primary display screen shifted from the corporate logo to a live, encrypted video feed. The camera focused not on a conference room, but on a neutral, sunlit legal office downtown. Catherine Vance sat at the center of the screen, dressed in a sharp charcoal blazer over a silk blouse. The bruise on her cheek was still faintly visible beneath professional makeup, but her expression was completely serene, devoid of any hesitation or fear. Beside her sat federal prosecutor David Sterling, alongside a team of compliance investigators.
"Good morning, members of the board," Catherine’s voice resonated clearly through the high-end audio system, commanding absolute silence across the massive room. "For the past three years, I have served not only as Julian Vance’s wife, but as an undercover forensic investigator embedded within this organization. What you see on your tablets right now is the complete, unredacted ledger of Vance Global's systematic tax evasion, environmental dumping violations, and fraudulent asset concealment spanning the last decade."

Richard stood up abruptly, slamming his hands onto the glass table. "This is an outrage!" he shouted, his face turning a deep crimson. "This woman is a disgruntled former family member using stolen documents to launch a hostile takeover! Security, cut this feed immediately!" But none of the security personnel outside moved; the system override had locked out local building controls, transferring administrative authority entirely to the federal stream.
Julian remained seated, staring up at the screen where his wife—the woman he had dismissed, shouted at, and ultimately abandoned on a marble terrace just two nights prior—commanded the attention of the corporate world. He felt a strange mixture of humiliation and profound, reluctant awe. She had not broken under their pressure; she had simply outmaneuvered them at every single turn. "Sit down, Father," Julian said quietly, his voice cutting through Richard's tirade with unexpected authority. Richard stared down at his son in stunned disbelief, realizing for the first time that Julian had already surrendered the fight.
