Chapter 3

The morning sunlight sliced horizontally across the sleek, minimalist offices of Vance Global Industries, but there was no warmth in the executive suite. Julian sat behind his sprawling mahogany desk, his tuxedo replaced by a charcoal-gray tailored suit, though the lines of exhaustion around his eyes remained carved deep from a sleepless night. His phone lay face up on the polished wood, vibrating with a relentless cadence of emergency notifications. Every major corporate account, every discretionary trust, and every operational line of credit had been frozen at midnight. The board of directors was in full revolt, their private chat groups blowing up with frantic demands for an explanation.

The heavy oak door swung open without a knock, and Julian’s father, Richard Vance, strode into the room. Richard’s face was mottled with fury, his gray hair slightly disheveled. Without a word, he slammed a tablet onto the desk, displaying a red compliance alert from the federal banking commission. "What in God's name have you done?" Richard roared, his voice bouncing off the glass walls. "The European liquidity reserves are completely locked. The auditors are citing a Tier-One compliance breach originating from an authorized master key. Your name is on the digital signature, Julian."

Julian stood up slowly, leaning his palms against the desk. He had spent the last four hours trying to access the master database, only to find his own executive credentials revoked and replaced by an override code registered to an independent holding company he did not recognize. "It wasn't me," Julian said, his voice dangerously low. He looked at his father, seeing the sudden flicker of genuine fear behind the older man's bluster. "It was Catherine." Richard scoffed, pacing toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. "Your wife? A woman we pulled out of obscurity? Don't be absurd. She doesn't have the clearance, the capital, or the intellect to orchestrate a corporate freeze of this magnitude."

"She took the master audit drive last night," Julian countered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "She left her clutch on the terrace. The drive was inside it." The silence that followed was heavy and suffocating. Richard stopped pacing, turning to stare at his son with eyes narrowed in cold realization. For thirty years, the Vance family had operated above the law, relying on intimidation, social standing, and bribery to protect their empire. They had underestimated Catherine from the very beginning, viewing her as an accessory rather than a formidable adversary. Now, the empire was held hostage by the very person they had spent the evening humiliating.
