Chapter 5

The afternoon rain began to lash against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Julian’s penthouse apartment high above the city. The expansive living room, usually a showcase of minimalist luxury and quiet isolation, felt cavernous and cold. Julian poured himself a finger of scotch, the amber liquid swirling in the crystal glass as he stared out at the gray skyline. The doopbell chimed softly, a single, polite note that made him tense. He set the glass down and walked slowly toward the private elevator foyer, half-expecting process servers or investigators.
Instead, the private elevator doors slid open to reveal Marcus Vance, looking impeccably tailored in a dark wool overcoat. Despite sharing a surname, Marcus was no relation to Julian’s dynasty; he was a brilliant, fiercely independent financial forensic analyst who had operated quietly in the background of corporate circles for a decade. Julian’s hand instinctively clenched into a fist at his side. "You," Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "You helped her orchestrate this corporate hijacking."
Marcus stepped out of the elevator with measured calm, his hands tucked neatly into his coat pockets. He did not flinch at Julian’s hostility. "I helped Catherine execute a forensic audit of systemic financial fraud," Marcus corrected smoothly, his tone devoid of fear. "What you call a hijacking, the federal banking commission calls the recovery of stolen assets. I'm not here to fight, Julian. I'm here to deliver a message." Julian stepped back, allowing Marcus into the room, though his eyes never left the analyst's face. "If Catherine wants to talk, she can face me herself instead of hiding behind shell companies and hired guns."
"She isn't hiding," Marcus said, pausing near the center of the expansive room. "She's working. And she sent me because she knew your pride would prevent you from listening to her directly. She wants you to understand something before tomorrow morning's emergency board meeting. This isn't about destroying the Vance family name out of spite. It's about accountability. Your father built this empire on the ruined lives of subcontractors, falsified environmental reports, and hidden debts. Catherine spent the last three years uncovering every single file. Last night was simply the trigger."

Julian walked over to the bar, setting his glass down with a sharp clink. "She wore my ring," Julian muttered, the bitterness leaking through his tightly controlled exterior. "She lived under my roof."
"And you let your mother treat her like domestic help," Marcus replied sharply, his calm demeanor finally cracking just enough to show genuine disgust. "You watched Eleanor strike her across the face with a slammed door, and instead of defending your wife, you blamed her for speaking the truth. You thought she was a permanent fixture in your life, Julian. You were wrong." Marcus placed a single manila folder on the edge of the coffee table. "Read that before you walk into the boardroom tomorrow. It's your only chance to walk away with your freedom intact."
