Chapter 5: Confronting the Mother

By noon, Julian and Clara had packed Leo into his car seat and driven across town to the suburban retirement community where Julian’s mother, Martha, lived in a cozy, sunlit apartment overlooking a manicured courtyard. Martha was sitting by the window knitting a blue wool scarf when they arrived, her silver hair neatly brushed and her demeanor calm. However, the moment she saw the grave expressions on Julian and Clara’s faces, her needles slowed to a stop. Julian didn't waste any time. He placed the old birth certificate and the faded photograph directly onto the coffee table in front of her. Martha looked down at the papers, and all the warmth instantly drained from her wrinkled face. She closed her eyes for a long moment, letting out a heavy sigh that sounded like a confession. "You found the cabinet," Martha said softly, her voice devoid of surprise. "I always prayed your father would destroy those papers before he passed, but he could never let go of his guilt." Clara sat beside Martha, taking the elderly woman’s frail hand. "Mother, please tell us what this means. Who is this child on the certificate, and what does Evelyn have to do with any of this?" Martha looked at her son, tears welling up in her clouded eyes. She explained that decades ago, Julian’s grandfather had legally adopted Julian’s father under complicated circumstances, but in doing so, he had bypassed the rightful claims of his eldest daughter—Evelyn’s mother—who had been born out of wedlock and hidden away to protect the family’s social standing. When Julian’s father inherited the estate, he maintained the deception, cutting Evelyn’s branch of the family off without a dime while knowing full well they were the legitimate heirs to the family fortune. Evelyn had discovered the truth years ago through a genealogist, which explained her intense bitterness and her relentless pursuit of revenge against Julian’s household. "She didn't just come to dinner to cause a scene," Martha whispered, her voice trembling. "Evelyn came to demand her rightful share, and when you threw her out, Julian, you only accelerated a war she has been planning for a decade."
