Chapter 10: The Counter-Proposal

By evening, the counter-proposal was drafted, signed, and delivered to Arthur Pendelton via courier. Julian and Clara waited in their living room, the atmosphere tense and fragile. The white dinner plate from the ill-fated holiday gathering had long been washed and put away in the kitchen cabinet, but the memory of that night lingered in every corner of the house. Leo was crawling across the rug now, babbling happily as he chased a red rubber ball, completely unaware that the roof over his head hung by a thread. At precisely seven o'clock, their doorbell rang. Julian walked to the front door and pulled it open. Arthur Pendelton stood on the porch alone, holding a single folder. He didn't look triumphant or defeated; he looked like a man who had simply completed a tedious transaction. "My client has reviewed your counter-offer," Arthur said smoothly as Julian let him inside. They gathered around the coffee table in the living room. Arthur opened the folder to reveal a document bearing Evelyn’s signature. "She agrees to the cash buyout and the surrender of the trust accounts, on one specific condition." Julian tensed up. "What condition?" Arthur looked directly at Julian. "She wants a formal, written apology for the physical assault that took place here, and a promise that you will drop any pending police charges regarding the slap." Clara scoffed, crossing her arms. "She struck a defenseless baby, and now she wants an apology for getting slapped back?" Arthur remained completely impassive. "Take it or leave it, Mrs. Vance. Those are her terms for a peaceful closure. Otherwise, the lawsuit proceeds tomorrow morning, and you lose the house anyway." Julian looked at Clara, his eyes searching hers for guidance. It went against every fiber of his being to apologize to a woman who had harmed his son, but he knew the practical reality of the situation. Protecting his family meant swallowing his pride. With a heavy sigh, Julian picked up the pen, signed his name to the apology letter, and handed it back to the lawyer along with the buyout documents. The war was over, but the emotional scars would remain forever.
