Chapter 3: Uncovering the First Secret

The following morning broke with a brilliant, blinding glare of sunlight reflecting off the fresh blanket of snow covering the lawn. Clara was up early, making coffee in the quiet kitchen while Leo played happily on the woven rug with a set of wooden stacking blocks. Julian walked in shortly after, looking exhausted as if he hadn't slept a single minute during the night. He poured himself a mug of black coffee and leaned against the counter, staring out at the frozen backyard. "I checked my phone," Julian said quietly. "Evelyn tried to call my mother three times past midnight. Mother didn't answer because she turns her phone off after nine." Clara turned around, holding her mug with both hands. "Do you think Evelyn told her about what happened?" Julian shook his head. "Knowing Evelyn, she wouldn't just complain. She would twist the story to make us look like the monsters. But that’s not what’s bothering me." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, old brass key that he had found inside an antique desk drawer in the den while looking for a flashlight the night before. Clara recognized the key immediately; it belonged to the locked filing cabinet in the basement that Julian’s father had kept shut for decades before passing away. Julian explained that his father had always forbidden anyone from opening that specific cabinet, claiming it only contained boring tax documents and old insurance papers from the family business. Yet, after the unsettling confrontation with Evelyn, Julian felt an overwhelming urge to uncover whatever his family had buried away. They walked down the creaking basement stairs together, the cold air hitting their faces as they reached the unfinished storage section near the furnace. The filing cabinet sat in the dark corner, covered in a thin layer of dust. Julian inserted the brass key into the rusted lock. It turned with a satisfying, heavy click that echoed through the quiet basement, opening a Pandora's box of long-forgotten family history.
