Chapter 12 - The Empty Hallway

The heavy oak front door clicked shut behind Clara and Leo, sealing off the cacophony of sirens, shouting officers, and weeping family members. Outside, the cool night breeze hit Clara’s face like a physical shock, clearing the heavy, metallic stench of blood and fear from her lungs. She strapped Leo tightly into the backseat of her sedan, locking all the doors before sliding into the driver's seat. Her hands finally began to tremble, the adrenaline completely draining from her body to leave behind a hollow, aching exhaustion.

Through the windshield, she watched as police officers led Arthur Vance out of the house first, his head held high in defiance as the cold night air whipped his matted silver hair around his sunken face. He didn't look back at the suburban facade he had cursed for twenty years.

Moments later, Grandma Evelyn emerged, flanked by two patrol officers. She looked impossibly small, her frail shoulders hunched beneath her blue cardigan, her white hair disheveled as she shuffled slowly down the front steps toward a waiting cruiser. She didn't scream or curse; she simply stared down at the concrete driveway as if searching for the cracks where her life had finally spilled out.

Finally, Mark was brought out in handcuffs, his head bowed low, his expensive blue button-down shirt stained with sweat and dirt. He cast one desperate, pleading glance toward Clara’s car parked across the street, but Clara simply put the car in drive and pulled away from the curb without a single hesitation.

The drive to the motel on the outskirts of town was entirely silent, save for the soft, steady breathing of Leo sleeping soundly in the back seat, completely exhausted by the nightmarish ordeal. Clara checked into a modest, brightly lit room, tucked her son safely into the clean white bed, and sat down on the edge of the mattress with her phone in her hand.

Her phone buzzed violently against the nightstand, displaying an incoming call from an unknown number. She stared at the screen for a long time, watching the digits flash before finally pressing accept and holding the device to her ear.

“Mrs. Vance?” a calm, professional voice asked from the other end of the line. “This is Detective Miller. I’m calling from the property records office.”

Clara gripped the edge of the mattress, her heart skipping a beat.

“Yes, Detective. What is it?” she asked, her voice strained.

“We just finished auditing the original 2004 property transfer documents,” Miller said slowly, pausing as if weighing his next words carefully. “And we found something else hidden in the vault—something even Arthur didn't know about.”
