Chapter 10 - The Confession Beneath the Strobe Lights

The red and blue police strobes flashed frantically across Evelyn’s face, casting eerie shadows over her distorted features as her thumb hovered millimeters above the detonator switch. The room was so dead silent that the electric hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen sounded like a roaring engine.
“You’re lying,” Evelyn hissed, her voice trembling as she glared at Arthur. “You drained the accounts to run away with that woman from the bank! You brought shame on this family!”
“That woman didn't exist, Mother, and you know it,” Arthur replied, his voice terrifyingly calm despite the steel cuffs biting into his scarred wrists. He took a slow step forward, ignoring the laser sights dancing across his chest. “You forged my signature because the business was failing. When I caught you moving the corporate funds into your personal offshore accounts, you panicked. You told Mark I was stealing from him, and you handed him the frying pan while I was packing my desk.”
Mark stopped weeping. He raised his head slowly from the floor, his eyes wide and bloodshot as he stared at his mother. The pathetic, whimpering boy vanished for a split second, replaced by a terrifying, hollow realization.
“Mom...” Mark whispered, his voice cracking horribly. “Is that... is that true? You told me he was trying to ruin us.”
Evelyn’s hands began to shake violently, the detonator rattling against her knuckles.
“I protected you!” Evelyn screamed, her voice cracking into a jagged shriek. “I built this life for you! I sacrificed everything so you wouldn't end up in the gutter like your father!”
Detective Miller slowly lowered his weapon by a fraction of an inch, keeping his eyes locked on Evelyn’s trembling thumb. He signaled subtly with his left hand behind his back, gesturing for the patrolmen to flank the armchair from the sides.
“It’s over, Mrs. Vance,” Miller said softly, his voice cutting through her hysterics. “The offshore accounts were seized by federal investigators three days ago. We have the wire transfers. We have your signature on the corporate ledger from 2004. The house, the money, the lies—it’s all gone.”
Evelyn froze. The manic fire in her eyes suddenly sputtered and died, leaving behind the dull, vacant stare of an ancient woman realizing she had spent her entire existence building a prison out of greed. Her shoulders slumped forward, her grip on the heavy brass detonator loosening.

Before the officers could lunge forward to grab her, Arthur suddenly lunged across the room with terrifying, unnatural speed, ripping his handcuffed wrists upward and smashing them down directly onto Evelyn’s shoulder.
