Chapter 8 - The Price of Power

The high-definition monitor cast a harsh, sickly blue light across the faces of the men and woman standing inside the secure terminal room. On screen, Elena’s mother blinked against the glare of the warehouse light, her fragile frame trembling visibly against the rough wooden chair. Standing directly behind her, cloaked in deep shadow, the unknown assailant held a silver-barreled pistol steady, pressing it close to the old woman’s graying hair.

Elena let out a choked gasp, lunging toward the monitor as if she could physically step through the glass and pull her mother away from the danger.

“Mom!” Elena cried out, her fingernails scraping desperately against the smooth surface of the digital screen before Marcus gently pulled her back by the shoulders, keeping her out of the direct line of sight.

“Don't look at the screen, sweetie,” Elena whispered frantically to little Leo, spinning the toddler around and burying his curly head against her waist so he wouldn't see the nightmare unfolding on the display.

Jax Vance stood like a statue carved from black granite. His dark eyes drilled into the grainy silhouette of the assailant on the monitor. He didn't blink, didn't breathe, his mind racing through hundreds of corporate enemies, ruthless board members he had ousted, and hedge fund rivals he had financially ruined over the past decade.

“Identify yourself,” Jax spoke into the console microphone, his voice dripping with a lethal, controlled fury that made the air in the room feel instantly heavier. “You want me. The old woman has nothing to do with this.”

The shadowy figure on the screen chuckled—a raspy, distorted sound that had clearly been electronically altered to mask their true identity.

“Oh, Mr. Vance, everyone in your circle has something to do with your legacy,” the voice hissed through the speakers, synthetic and cold. “You thought you could bury the restructuring scandal of Vance Global by scrubbing the public records. But you forgot one crucial detail: blood leaves a stain that no amount of money can wash away.”

Jax’s jaw tightened sharply. The restructuring scandal—an old corporate maneuver from three years ago where a subsidiary collapsed, resulting in heavy financial losses and whispered rumors of negligence. Jax had legally cleared his name, but the collateral damage had clearly left a bitter, vengeful survivor behind.

“You want your assets back? You want the board to bow to your control without interference?” the voice continued, mocking the billionaire. “Then you walk alone onto Pier 42 at midnight. No bodyguards. No tactical teams. Just you, the briefcase containing the bearer bonds from your Swiss account, and this waitress.”

Elena whipped her head around to stare at Jax, her eyes wide with shock and disbelief. “Me? Why does he want me there? I have nothing to do with your corporate corruption!”

“Because you’re the only variable he didn't account for,” Jax replied, his voice terrifyingly calm as he calculated the tactical angles. “You broke through the boy’s grief when everyone else failed. You represent the human element he cannot control, and therefore, you are the ultimate leverage to break my composure.”

Marcus stepped forward, his face etched with absolute rejection of the plan. “Mr. Vance, you cannot go down there alone. It’s an execution trap. Let me deploy the tactical strike team through the water tunnels. We can take the warehouse before they even—.”

“No,” Jax interrupted, cutting his lead bodyguard off with a sharp wave of his hand. “If we move in with a tactical team, the first thing they’ll do is pull the trigger on her mother. We play their game, but on my terms.”

Elena stepped up to the console, pushing past Marcus with a fierce determination that surprised both men. She stared directly into the camera lens on the monitor, her voice trembling slightly with emotion, but ringing with absolute clarity.

“Listen to me, whoever you are,” Elena spoke directly into the recording mic, her eyes blazing. “If you hurt my mother, I swear to God I will make sure you regret the day you were born. But if you let her go unharmed, I will walk onto that pier with him myself.”

The distorted voice on the speaker laughed again—a chilling, hollow sound that echoed through the terminal.

“Brave words from a waitress, Miss Miller. We’ll see how brave you feel when the tide comes in at midnight.”

May you like

The screen abruptly flickered to black, leaving the room in heavy, suffocating darkness.
