Chapter 3 - The Flash of Intrigue

The sudden, blinding flash of a camera strobe cut through the dimly lit restaurant like lightning, momentarily blinding everyone in the room. Jax Vance reacted with the honed instincts of a man who lived his life in the crosshairs of the tabloid media. In a fraction of a second, he lunged forward, using his broad shoulders to shield Elena and the sleeping toddler from the intrusive lens, while his lead bodyguard, Marcus, bolted toward the entrance with terrifying speed.

“Get that camera!” Marcus roared, shoving past the heavy glass doors into the pouring rain, but the alleyway outside was already empty, save for a discarded cigarette hissing in the puddle.

Inside, the warm ambiance of the steakhouse felt permanently altered. Jax turned back around, his face a mask of cold fury as he looked at Elena, who was holding Leo tightly against her shoulder, shielding the boy’s ears from the sudden commotion. The privacy that Jax had paid exorbitant sums to secure had been brutally shattered in a single second.

“Who was that?” Jax demanded, his voice dangerously low as he stepped closer to Elena, towering over her. “Did you set this up? Is this some kind of setup to get leverage against me?”

Elena glared up at him, her eyes flashing with sudden, righteous anger. She adjusted the sleeping toddler in her arms, careful not to wake him, before stepping right into the billionaire’s personal space.

“Are you out of your mind?” Elena hissed, her voice trembling with indignation. “I work sixty hours a week slinging plates of overpriced steak just to pay my mother’s medical bills. I don't even know who you are, let alone care about your miserable, paranoid little life!”

Jax stared at her, taken aback by her unyielding spirit. In his world, people either cowered in fear or smiled greedily for his money. This woman was entirely different, and that difference terrified him more than any hostile corporate takeover.

“You’re holding my son,” Jax pointed out coldly, gesturing toward Leo. “And someone just photographed you doing it. By morning, every gossip rag in the city will have your face plastered next to mine.”

“Then maybe you should have thought about that before you locked yourself in an ivory tower and forgot how to be a father,” Elena shot back without missing a beat. She began walking past him toward the staff exit in the back of the restaurant.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Jax called out, taking a step after her.

“Home,” Elena replied over her shoulder, not stopping for a second. “Unlike you, I have an actual life to get back to. And if you have any decency left in that black suit of yours, you won't follow us.”

Marcus rushed back inside, shaking the rain from his broad shoulders, looking apologetically at his boss. “He’s gone, Mr. Vance. But I checked the security feed outside. It wasn't a standard paparazzo. The man was using a professional telephoto rig, and he waited until you interacted directly with her.”

Jax’s mind raced, connecting dots at a terrifying speed. Someone was watching him. Someone knew he was at this specific restaurant, and more importantly, someone knew his weak spot was no longer his company—it was his son. He watched Elena disappear through the swinging kitchen doors, realizing with a sinking feeling in his stomach that the waitress had just become the most dangerous target in New York City.

Jax pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, dialing a private number with ruthless efficiency. “Find out everything about the waitress at table twelve. Who she is, where she lives, and who was watching us tonight.”

Marcus nodded grimly, stepping aside as Jax marched toward the exit, only to stop dead in his tracks when his phone buzzed instantly with an incoming message containing a single, chilling photograph taken through the restaurant window just moments ago, with a typed caption reading: Leave the boy with her, or the real auction begins.
