Chapter 5 - The Trap Closes

The stale air inside the black bulletproof Lincoln Navigator felt heavy with unspoken tension as it wove through the heavy morning traffic of the Queensboro Bridge. In the back seat, Elena sat rigidly beside Jax Vance, staring straight ahead at the tinted glass partition separating them from the driver. She had packed a single small canvas bag containing a change of clothes and her mother’s medical files, knowing full well that staying in her apartment was no longer an option. The threat had been too precise, too chillingly close.

Jax sat with his arms crossed over his chest, his dark suit immaculate despite the frantic events of the morning. His jaw was clenched so tightly that the muscles twitched visibly. He hadn't spoken a single word since Marcus escorted Elena down the stairs into the waiting vehicle, but the aura of suppressed rage radiating from him was palpable.

“Your security is a joke,” Elena finally broke the silence, her voice trembling slightly with a mix of fear and anger. “How did someone get into your penthouse so easily? I thought you people lived behind titanium walls.”

Jax slowly turned his head, his dark eyes fixing on her with a cold, analytical gaze that made her skin crawl.

“My security system is military-grade,” Jax replied, his voice a low, gravelly hum. “The biometric locks, the facial recognition cameras, the private elevator—none of them triggered an alarm. Which means whoever got in didn't hack the system. They had an internal access code. Someone on my payroll sold me out.”

Elena swallowed hard, hugging her canvas bag closer to her chest. “And you brought me into the middle of a corporate war? Are you insane? I have an elderly mother to take care of. I shouldn't even be in this car!”

“Your mother is already being transferred to the Vance Memorial Medical Center,” Jax stated calmly, as if discussing the weather. “She’s occupying the private cardiac wing right now, under armed guard. Her medical debts are wiped clean, effective as of five minutes ago.”

Elena whipped her head around to face him, her eyes wide with shock and fury. “You what? You didn't have the right to do that! You can't just buy my life!”

“I didn't buy your life, Miss Miller. I secured your perimeter,” Jax countered sharply, his voice cutting through her protests with absolute authority. “The moment that note was left in my son’s room, your life became directly tied to mine. Whether you like it or not, you are now a target.”

Before Elena could launch into a furious tirade, the Navigator smoothly glided down a private subterranean ramp beneath a towering glass-and-steel skyscraper in midtown Manhattan. The heavy steel security gates rolled shut behind them with a definitive, echoing clang that sounded disturbingly like a prison door locking into place.

The vehicle came to a smooth halt inside the private garage. Marcus instantly opened the door on Elena’s side, offering a steady hand to help her out. As Elena stepped onto the polished concrete floor, the heavy rear door on the driver's side opened, and a sleepy, curly-haired toddler stumbled out into the dim light.

Leo was still wearing his knitted cream sweater from the night before. His big, dark eyes blinked sleepily as he looked around the cavernous garage, before suddenly locking onto Elena standing by the car door. Without a moment's hesitation, the boy toddled across the concrete, bypassed his billionaire father entirely, and wrapped his small arms tightly around Elena’s knees.

Elena froze, looking down at the child with a mixture of helplessness and melting compassion. She knelt down, gently stroking his curly brown hair, whispering softly to him.

Jax watched the interaction from over the roof of the car, his stern expression softening for a fraction of a second before a red laser dot suddenly danced across his chest, landing squarely over his heart.
