Chapter 4 - The Voice in the Wire

Clara stared at the vintage rotary phone on the mahogany table as if it were a venomous snake about to strike. The ringing continued, echoing through the empty, high-ceilinged hallway with relentless insistence. Arthur remained slumped on the stairs, his gaze fixed on the frayed edge of the carpet runner where his boots had worn away the threads over thirty years of domestic routine. Martha finally moved, her slow, shuffling footsteps carrying her toward the table as if walking toward an executioner. She picked up the heavy black handset and pressed it slowly to her ear.

“Hello,” Martha said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands.

Clara watched her mother’s face carefully, searching for any sign of shifting emotion. For thirty seconds, Martha simply listened, her breathing shallow and even. A heavy silence filled the space between them, broken only by the distant sound of traffic crawling along the highway outside.

“She wants to talk to you,” Martha said quietly, extending the receiver toward Clara like an offering to the gods of misfortune.

Clara took the plastic handset, feeling the residual warmth of her mother’s palm against the smooth surface. She lifted it to her ear, her jaw tightening as she prepared for another onslaught of venom.

“Elena, if you think this phone call is going to stop us from filing criminal charges, you’re out of your mind,” Clara said, her voice dropping an octave into a cold, menacing rasp.

There was a soft, mocking laugh on the other end of the line, accompanied by the muffled sound of a car indicator clicking rhythmically.

“You can file whatever you want, Clara,” Elena’s voice came through clear and crisp, devoid of any prior panic. “By the time the local police finish jurisdiction paperwork, I’ll be sitting on a beach in the Grenadines with a passport that says I own every square inch of this house and everything inside it.”

Clara gripped the edge of the console table so hard her knuckles turned ghostly white.

“The authorities will freeze your assets within the hour,” Clara countered, though doubt crept like a shadow into the corners of her mind. “My lawyer has already flagged the transfer.”

“Your lawyer is currently packing his own office,” Elena replied smoothly. “I retained his firm three months ago on retainer. Conflict of interest, darling. He can't represent you against me.”

The handset slipped slightly from Clara’s sweaty fingers as the horrifying magnitude of the betrayal settled over her like a leaden blanket.

“You absolute monster,” Clara whispered.

“I’m just a survivor,” Elena replied before the line clicked dead with a sharp, hollow tone.
