Chapter 3 - Shadows on the Stairs

The front door slammed downstairs with a concussion that shook the framed family portraits on the hallway wall. Elena was gone, leaving behind the faint, lingering scent of expensive perfume and bitter ashes. Arthur slowly lowered himself onto the top step, burying his weathered face in his hands. Martha stood motionless by the bedroom door, her beige sweater looking suddenly too large for her shrinking frame. Clara remained frozen by the stack of moving boxes, the phone still clutched in her hand, the screen glowing with a new notification from the bank warning of an impending overdraft fee.
“She planned this,” Clara said, her voice shaking as she stared down the empty stairwell. “The entire time we were nursing him, she was talking to real estate brokers behind our backs.”
Arthur didn't look up. His shoulders trembled with a silent grief that had nothing to do with property lines and everything to do with the destruction of his family.
“We trusted the wrong person,” Arthur muttered hoarsely. “Both of us did. I signed the power of attorney over to her because my eyesight was failing. I thought she was helping us manage the medical bills.”
Clara felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach. She walked slowly over to her father, kneeling beside him on the cold wooden step and placing a gentle hand on his knee.
“What are you saying, Dad?” Clara asked, her heart pounding against her ribs. “Did Elena have power over your personal accounts too?”
Arthur slowly raised his head, his eyes red-rimmed and haunted. He reached into the pocket of his gray trousers and pulled out a crumpled yellow envelope, handing it to Clara with trembling fingers.
“She cleaned out your mother’s retirement fund three weeks ago,” Arthur whispered. “And she used my electronic signature to authorize the transfer.”
Clara tore open the envelope, her eyes scanning the bank statement in the dim hallway light. The figures blurred together, but the bottom line was unmistakably clear: every single penny they had saved for their retirement had vanished into an offshore account registered in the Cayman Islands under a shell corporation bearing Elena’s maiden name.
“We have to call the police right now,” Clara declared, standing up abruptly.

Before Arthur could answer, his landline phone on the hallway table began to ring with a shrill, piercing sound that cut through the silence.
