Chapter 12 - The Finger on the Trigger

The hallway seemed to tilt on its axis as the cold barrel of the silver pistol caught the dim light of the overhead sconce. Arthur stood frozen on the staircase, his aging frame exposed and defenseless against the trembling muzzle pointed directly at his heart. Martha let out a piercing shriek from the study doorway, her hands covering her mouth as she stumbled backward against the doorframe. Clara didn't think; survival instinct took over every muscle in her body as she launched herself forward across the polished hardwood floor, closing the distance between them in a desperate, flying tackle.

“Drop it!” Clara screamed, her hands grasping wildly for Elena’s wrist just as the heavy front door burst open behind them with a splintering crash.

Tom stood in the doorway, a heavy steel tire iron gripped in his right hand, his eyes scanning the chaotic scene with cold, lethal calculation.

“Drop the weapon, Elena!” Tom bellowed, taking two rapid strides into the foyer.

Elena spun around, swinging the barrel of the pistol toward Tom with a wild, hysterical cry, her finger tightening against the curved metal of the trigger.

“Stay back!” Elena shrieked, spittle flying from her lips as her face twisted into a mask of pure terror and rage.

The hesitation lasted only a fraction of a second, but it was enough. Clara slammed her shoulder directly into Elena’s side, throwing her off balance just as a sharp, deafening explosion ripped through the enclosed hallway, sending a tongue of fire and acrid smoke blasting into the high ceiling.

The bullet shattered the glass casing of the antique barometer on the wall, sending a shower of glittering glass shards raining down over the Persian rug. The deafening echo of the gunshot rattled the windowpanes throughout the entire house, followed by a thick, suffocating silence.

Elena stumbled backward against the console table, the pistol slipping from her numb fingers and clattering loudly onto the floorboards. Tom closed the remaining distance in a single bound, grabbing Elena by both arms and pinning her firmly against the wood-paneled wall while Clara scrambled on her hands and knees to retrieve the fallen firearm, kicking it far out of reach beneath the heavy antique sideboard.

Arthur slowly lowered himself onto the stairs, his breathing shallow and erratic as Martha rushed to his side, checking his limbs for any sign of injury.

“Are you hit?” Martha asked frantically, her hands trembling as she touched his chest and arms.

Arthur shook his head slowly, staring at the smoking hole in the plaster wall just inches above where his head had been a moment before.

“I’m fine,” Arthur whispered, his voice trembling as he looked across the hallway at Elena, who was sobbing hysterically in Tom’s grip. “It’s over, Elena. The police are already on their way.”
