Chapter 5

Armed with small bags, Arthur and Lily descended the sweeping staircase, stepping into a tense, heavy silence. But Eleanor was not waiting in the foyer. Instead, the warm amber light spilled from beneath the heavy oak door of Arthur’s private study—his sanctuary of contracts and confidential files. Arthur frowned, tightening his grip on Lily’s small hand. He pushed the door open to find Eleanor seated casually behind his massive mahogany desk, casually flipping through a thick leather-bound folder containing his most sensitive corporate portfolios and personal legal documents. She looked up, her diamond earrings catching the lamplight as a triumphant, chilling smile played upon her crimson lips. "Looking for these, darling?" she asked smoothly, tapping the cover of the folder against the polished wood.

Arthur stepped into the room, positioning Lily safely behind him. "Leave the files, Eleanor. We are leaving, and calling the lawyers in the morning. Our marriage is over." Eleanor let out a sharp, mocking laugh that echoed coldly off the book-lined walls. She stood up, smoothing her burgundy dress with unhurried grace. "You think it’s that simple, Arthur? You walk out that door, and these files—detailing offshore accounts, regulatory oversights, and confidential shareholder communications—find their way directly to the financial press and federal investigators. You will lose your company, your wealth, and your freedom overnight." She stepped around the desk, closing the distance between them with predatory confidence. "You stay, you play the devoted husband, and Lily remains under my supervision, learning proper discipline. Those are your only options."

The cruel reality of Eleanor’s trap settled over the room like a suffocating blanket. She had anticipated his rebellion and prepared an airtight defense, using his own corporate ambition as a shackle to keep him bound to her. Arthur felt a cold sweat break out across his neck. He looked down at Lily, who was clutching the hem of his coat once more, sensing the sudden danger radiating from the adults. The moral dilemma tore at his very core: sacrifice his freedom and leave his daughter to the slow, psychological torture of a sociopathic stepmother, or destroy his entire career and risk prison to free them both. But as he stared into Eleanor’s unyielding, venomous eyes, a cold clarity washed over him. No corporate empire was worth his daughter's soul. He squared his shoulders, a dangerous, defiant resolve replacing his panic.
