Chapter 12

Arthur slowly raised his hands, turning around to face his wife. Eleanor stood framed in the doorway of the dressing room, wearing a stunning emerald-green silk robe that contrasted sharply with her cascading red hair. But any illusion of elegance was utterly shattered by the heavy black revolver she held leveled directly at his chest with a steady, practiced grip. Her sparkling diamond earrings caught the harsh overhead lights, casting cold, jagged reflections across her face. "You really are a fool, Arthur," Eleanor said, stepping forward with slow, deliberate strides, her lips curling into a cruel, triumphant smile. "Did you honestly think you could outsmart me? That I wouldn't anticipate your pathetic little alliance with Marcus Vance?"

Arthur stared down the barrel of the gun, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs, yet his mind remained crystal clear and hyper-focused. "You're delusional, Eleanor. The authorities already know about the embezzlement and the abuse. Even if you pull that trigger, you won't last twenty-four hours before federal marshals tear this house apart," Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly calm. Eleanor let out a sharp, dismissive laugh, though a flicker of genuine panic crossed her eyes for a split second before she masked it with cold fury. "Let them come. By the time they break down these doors, you'll be nothing more than a tragic statistic—a disgraced corporate executive who snapped under pressure, took his own life, and tried to harm his family."

The sheer depravity of her plan hung heavily in the air, a chilling testament to the cold, calculating sociopath hiding behind the glamorous facade. Arthur knew he had mere seconds to act before her finger tightened on the trigger. He didn't look at the gun; instead, he locked his gaze onto her eyes, stepping slowly forward despite the weapon pointed at his chest. "You think you've won, Eleanor, but you underestimated one vital thing," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a hypnotic whisper. Eleanor paused, her brow furrowing slightly as she hesitated for a fraction of a second. "What could you possibly—" Before she could finish the sentence, Arthur lunged forward with explosive, desperate speed, using every ounce of his remaining strength to knock the barrel of the gun upward just as a deafening explosion shattered the quiet of the night.
