Chapter 10

The warning hit Arthur like a physical blow, knocking the wind from his lungs as he gripped the steering wheel of the sedan. Eleanor had moved faster and more viciously than he could have ever anticipated. By weaponizing the legal system and turning herself into the grieving, abandoned wife, she had preemptively painted him as the unhinged villain of the narrative. "Listen to me carefully, Marcus," Arthur said, fighting to keep his voice level despite the rising panic threatening to choke him. "Eleanor isn't what she seems. She subjected Lily to severe psychological abuse under our roof. I caught her red-handed, and when I tried to leave, she blackmailed me with corporate files she stole from my study." Marcus let out a sharp intake of breath on the other end. "Good God, Arthur. Do you have proof? Because right now, the district attorney is taking her statement very seriously."

"I don't have the physical files with me, but I know where she keeps the digital backups and the physical ledger in the master bedroom safe," Arthur replied quickly, his mind racing through the floor plan of the grand estate. "I need you to file an emergency protective custody order for Lily based on documented medical neglect, and I need you to initiate a quiet, unannounced forensic audit of our household finances. Eleanor has been embezzling corporate funds through shell accounts disguised as charity donations. That's how she finances her personal lifestyle without my direct oversight." Marcus was silent for a long moment, processing the immense legal and personal risks involved. "This is high-stakes federal territory, Arthur. If we move on this and fail to secure the evidence immediately, she will destroy us both before the judge even reads our petition."

"We don't have a choice," Arthur said firmly. "Meet me tonight at midnight at the old logging bridge three miles north of Oakhaven. I’ll hand over the exact combination to her private accounts and the locations of her hidden records. We end this tonight, Marcus." Without waiting for confirmation, Arthur hung up the burner phone, cutting the connection before his signal could be triangulated by local authorities working in tandem with Eleanor's high-priced legal team. He shoved the phone into his coat pocket, started the engine, and drove back toward the mountain cabin, a cold, heavy dread settling in his chest. The trap was closing rapidly, and every second they spent in the wilderness brought them closer to a final, explosive confrontation from which there might be no return.
