Chapter 6: An Unexpected Ally

Within minutes, the hospital was locked down. Dr. Daniel returned with Detective Sarah Ramos, an investigator assigned to major crimes who had been following a string of regional pharmaceutical thefts for months.
Clara handed the titanium capsule over without hesitation. "This is what he wanted. Whatever is on here, take it. Just keep my daughter safe."
Detective Ramos inspected the drive under the desk lamp. "Your husband isn't working alone, Mrs. Miller. For the past six months, high-grade synthetic opioids and corporate research data have been vanishing from distribution hubs across three states. We suspected an insider, but we couldn't bridge the chain of custody."
"He was moving digital formulas," Clara deduced, piecing together the ledgers she’d seen. "The buyer wanted physical handover on an air-gapped drive."
"Exactly," Ramos confirmed. "And whoever bought it isn't going to let Thomas walk away empty-handed. Which means they will track him, and eventually, they will track you."
Clara looked back at Maya, who was drifting into a light, medicine-induced sleep. "What do we do?"
