Chapter 10: The Fall
Thomas moved toward the shed ladder to climb up, but the sound of sirens began wailing in the distance, echoing through the valley. Backup was arriving.
Panicked, Thomas lunged for the ladder, trying to reach Clara's bag by force. As he grabbed the bottom rung, the rotting wood of the old barn structure gave way under his sudden weight. The ladder snapped, sending him crashing down onto the concrete cistern below with a sickening thud.
Inside the safehouse, the gunfire ceased as the two remaining assailants broke off their assault and fled into the surrounding woods, only to run directly into the advancing state trooper blockade.
Clara pulled Maya back from the edge, shielding her daughter's eyes from the sight below. Within minutes, tactical officers flooded the yard, flashlights cutting through the mist.

Thomas lay incapacitated on the ground, groaning in pain, his leg broken, unable to move. When the paramedics moved in to secure him, he reached out toward Clara, muttering incoherently, but Clara didn't look down again. She held Maya against her chest, feeling the steady, unbroken beat of her daughter's heart.
