Chapter 2: The House on Maple Street

Before the hospital security could be summoned, Clara made a split-second decision. "Doctor, prep her for surgery. Do whatever you must to get that thing out safely. But do not contact Thomas. Not yet."

Dr. Daniel nodded once, his jaw tight. "You have until the surgical board signs off. That gives you two hours before mandatory reporting triggers a domestic dispatch."

Clara bolted out the clinic doors into the driving autumn rain. The tires of her battered station wagon squealed against wet asphalt as she sped toward Maple Street. The neighborhood looked picture-perfect: manicured lawns, white picket fences, and golden oak leaves carpeting the sidewalk.

She let herself in through the side door. The house was eerie in its quietness. Thomas’s leather briefcase was gone from the entryway table, but his desk in the den stood unlocked.

Shuffling through the stacks of pharmaceutical delivery manifests, Clara found a ledger hidden beneath a falsified audit report. The names listed inside weren’t patients; they were offshore broker accounts. Attached to the back page was a travel itinerary for a midnight flight out of the country—a single passenger ticket under a false identity, booked for that very evening.

Thomas hadn’t just been using Maya to hide evidence; he was preparing to abandon them the moment the operation went south. The realization shattered whatever lingering denial Clara harbored. She wasn't just dealing with a neglectful husband; she was fighting a desperate man who viewed his family as collateral damage.
