Chapter 8

Julian climbed the stairs slowly, each step feeling heavier than the last as the reality of their altered existence settled into his bones. When he reached the landing, he paused outside Lily’s bedroom door. The white paint was slightly scuffed near the handle where she used to kick her shoes off after school. He raised his hand and rapped his knuckles gently against the wood, waiting for a small, timid voice to invite him in.

"Come in," Lily said.

Julian pushed the door open. Lily was sitting cross-legged in the center of her bed, her back against the headboard, holding a worn stuffed rabbit she had owned since she was a toddler. The sunlight streaming through her window highlighted the fine brown hair pulled back into its familiar ponytail, though her eyes looked heavy with the exhaustion of a child forced to grow up overnight.

"Hey," Julian said softly, walking over and sitting down on the edge of the mattress, keeping his movements slow and non-threatening.

"Are you going to work today?" Lily asked, looking down at the patchwork quilt instead of meeting his eyes.

"No. I took the week off," Julian replied, resting his forearms on his knees. "I thought we could spend some time together. Just the two of us, or the three of us if your mom wants to join, figuring out what our next steps are going to be."

Lily finally looked up, her lower lip trembling slightly. "Are you mad at me for finding the picture?"

Julian reached out, his hand gently resting over her small fingers where they clutched the stuffed rabbit. "No, Lily. I'm not mad at you. I'm grateful. It hurts, and it's complicated, and it turns everything I thought I knew upside down, but living in a lie isn't a life. You did the right thing by speaking up, even if it felt terrifying."

"Mama was crying in the kitchen earlier," Lily whispered, her voice cracking. "I heard her through the vent. She thinks you hate her."

"I don't hate her," Julian said carefully, choosing his words with the precision of a seasoned advocate. "Your mother made a desperate choice out of love, even if it was the wrong way to go about it. We have a lot of hard conversations ahead of us, and things are going to change, but I want you to know one thing above all else." He squeezed her hand gently, ensuring his eyes met hers directly. "You are my daughter. That was true yesterday, it’s true today, and it will be true long after all these papers and secrets are sorted out. Do you understand?"

Lily nodded, a single tear escaping her eye and rolling down her cheek, but this time there was a faint, watery smile accompanying it. She leaned forward, throwing her arms around Julian’s neck and burying her face in his grey sweater. Julian wrapped his arms tightly around her small frame, burying his face in her hair, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt like the beginning of a genuine release.

Downstairs, standing quietly at the foot of the stairs, Elena listened to the muffled sound of their voices through the open door, pressing a hand over her mouth as the tears finally came—not of fear, but of an overwhelming, undeserved grace.
