Chapter 6

The doorknob turned with a metallic click that seemed amplified a hundred times in the quiet hallway. Julian stepped back into the master bedroom, his dark suit jacket unbuttoned, his tie slightly loosened around his collar. He looked older than he had twenty minutes ago, the lines around his eyes etched deeper by the sheer weight of his thoughts. He didn't look at Elena. Instead, his gaze went straight to the bed, where Lily sat huddled under the duvet, watching him with wide, apprehensive eyes.
Julian closed the door behind him and walked slowly toward the center of the room, stepping carefully around the shards of broken glass on the floor. He stopped a few feet from the bed, his hands thrust deep into his trouser pockets. The air in the room was thick with unspoken questions, every breath a negotiation between a past built on deception and an uncertain future that demanded accountability.
"I went to the precinct," Julian said, his voice low and steady, carrying an exhaustion that ran deep into his bones.
Elena’s breath caught in her throat. She half-rose from the chair, her hands gripping the armrests. "Julian—"
"I didn't file a report," Julian interrupted, holding up a single hand to forestall whatever defense she was about to mount. He looked back at Lily, his expression softening just a fraction, though the sadness in his eyes remained absolute. "I sat in my car for twenty minutes staring at the intake desk. I thought about the laws I’ve sworn to uphold, the precedents I’ve argued, the absolute black and white of the criminal code."
Lily lowered her head, bracing herself for the blow she was certain was coming.
"And then I thought about you," Julian continued, taking another slow step closer to the mattress. "I thought about the night you had the croup when you were four, and how I carried you up and down this hallway for six hours until your fever broke. I thought about the science fair project we built out of toothpicks and glue that won second place in the county. The law doesn't account for those hours, Lily. It doesn't have a box on a form for a father who fell in love with a child before he ever knew her papers were wrong."
Elena let out a ragged breath that sounded half-laugh, half-sob, sinking back into the armchair as tears finally overflowed her lashes.
"Does that mean we have to leave?" Lily asked, her voice barely a whisper.
"No," Julian said firmly, sitting down on the edge of the mattress opposite Elena, close enough that the blanket brushed his knee. "You aren't going anywhere. But we cannot pretend this didn't happen, either. The lie is over, exactly as you said. From this moment on, we start over with the truth, no matter how painful it’s going to be to untangle."
"What truth?" Elena asked quietly from across the room. "The truth is that someone else gave birth to her. The truth is we committed a felony to keep her."
May you like
"The truth," Julian said, turning his gaze toward his wife with a fierce, unwavering resolve, "is that we are going to find out who she is, where she came from, and whether anyone is still looking for her. And then, we are going to do whatever it takes to adopt her legally, openly, and honestly."
