Chapter 13

The rain began to fall in a steady, relentless drizzle as Julian pulled his car back into the driveway of his suburban home late that evening. The dashboard clock read past nine o'clock. The house was illuminated by the warm glow of the living room lights, casting long, welcoming shadows across the wet lawn. He turned off the ignition, sat in the silence of the car for a moment, and took a deep breath. The burden of the secret was gone, replaced by a complex, terrifying truth that would change their lives forever, but at least it was a truth grounded in reality rather than deception.

When Julian pushed open the front door, the smell of cinnamon and tea greeted him. Elena was sitting at the kitchen island, staring down into an empty mug, while Lily was curled up on the living room sofa reading a book by the light of a floor lamp. Both of them looked up simultaneously as the door clicked shut, their faces a mixture of anxiety and hope.

"Julian?" Elena called out, standing up quickly and walking toward the entryway, her hands tightly clasped in front of her. "Where have you been? You didn't answer your phone."

Julian took off his wet coat, hanging it neatly on the brass hook by the door, and walked over to them. Lily had closed her book and was standing near the edge of the living room rug, watching him with wide, solemn eyes.

"I went north," Julian said, his voice steady, carrying an unusual calmness that seemed to quiet the tension in the room.

Elena’s breath hitched. "North? To the Vance estate?"

"I met Harrison Vance," Julian said, reaching into his coat pocket and pulling out the velvet pouch, though this time he didn't open it. He looked at Lily, then at Elena, making sure they both understood the magnitude of what he was about to say. "Sarah Vance was his niece. She left here ten years ago because she was terrified of her family's judgment, but she never stopped loving the child she gave away."

"Is she... is she coming back?" Lily asked, her small voice trembling as she took a hesitant step closer to her father.

"Sarah isn't coming back, Lily," Julian said gently, kneeling down so he was eye level with the child. "She passed away a few years ago. But her family is still there. And they have been looking for you—looking for any trace of her—for a decade."

Tears welled in Elena’s eyes as she sank against the wall, covering her mouth with her hands. "Does that mean... are they going to take her away from us?"

"No," Julian said firmly, reaching out to take Lily’s small hand in his. He looked up at his wife with complete assurance. "Harrison doesn't want a custody battle. He wants peace. He wants to know that Sarah’s daughter was loved, that she was given a safe home, and that her memory lives on. He invited us—all three of us—to visit the estate this weekend, to see where she came from, and to start the legal process of making our family official in the eyes of the law."

Lily let out a ragged breath, throwing her arms around Julian’s neck and burying her face in his shoulder. Julian held her tightly, looking over her head at Elena, who slowly walked across the room and knelt beside them, wrapping her arms around both of them.

"We're going to be okay," Julian whispered into the quiet room. "We're finally going to be okay."
