Chapter 8: The Envelope Beneath the Door

The elevator chime faded into an absolute, suffocating silence. Julian moved swiftly toward the foyer, motioning for Dr. Aris to stay back with Maya. Ajax trotted closely beside Julian, his muscular shoulders bunched and ready to spring, his dark eyes fixed entirely on the polished brass doors of the private lift. The digital floor indicator above the doors remained dark; the lift hadn't actually moved. That meant whoever had used the security override code was already standing in the private landing outside their door. Julian reached the heavy oak entryway, his hand hovering over the smart lock's control panel.
He didn't pull the door open immediately. Instead, he peered through the wide-angle security peephole. The private landing was entirely empty. The polished marble floor stretched out toward the elevator doors in pristine, undisturbed perfection, devoid of any human presence. Julian frowned, feeling a cold knot of confusion twist in his stomach. He unlocked the deadbolt with a sharp, metallic click and pulled the heavy door open a crack, scanning the perimeter of the hallway. Nothing. Just the endless, sterile expanse of the hotel’s top-floor corridor.
As he was about to shut the door in frustration, a flash of white caught his eye near the edge of the welcome mat. Resting directly on the floor was a plain, thick envelope, unaddressed, sealed with a dab of red wax bearing no discernible insignia. Julian crouched down slowly, his eyes darting down both ends of the empty hallway before reaching out to pick it up. The paper was heavy, expensive cotton stock—the kind used by high-end legal firms or private estates. He stood up, backed into the suite, and firmly locked the door behind him, sliding both deadbolts into place with a definitive clunk.
“What is it?” Aris asked, walking over from the dining area with Maya standing a few cautious steps behind him.
“I don’t know,” Julian muttered, turning the heavy envelope over in his hands. There was no return address, no postal stamp, no name written across the front. Just his own surname—*Vance*—embossed in crisp, elegant black ink across the center.
Maya stepped forward, her bare feet padding softly across the floor until she stood right beside Julian. She stared at the red wax seal with an intensity that bordered on fear. Her breathing quickened slightly, her chest rising and falling beneath the soft cotton of her pajamas. Without a word, she reached out and pressed her small thumb directly against the wax seal, as if verifying its authenticity through touch alone.

“They’re watching,” Maya whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the air conditioning.
Julian carefully slid his finger beneath the flap, breaking the brittle wax with a dry snap. He pulled out a single sheet of heavy cardstock. Written across the center in neat, deliberate handwriting was a short message that turned the blood in his veins to ice: “She was never truly lost, Julian. But the debt must still be paid.” At the bottom of the note was a single set of GPS coordinates, accompanied by a timestamp set for midnight that very night.
