Chapter 7: The Unseen Keeper

The morning sun climbed higher, casting bright, geometric squares of light across the hardwood floor of the penthouse. Dr. Aris arrived promptly at eight o'clock, carrying a fresh medical case and a small paper bag from a local bakery. He found Julian and Maya sitting quietly at the glass dining table. Maya was slowly sipping a cup of warm chamomile tea, while Ajax sat faithfully beside her chair, occasionally nudging her hand with his wet nose to remind her of his presence. Aris offered a warm, professional smile as he approached, setting his bag down on the edge of the sideboard.

“Good morning, Maya,” Aris said smoothly, pulling out a chair and sitting down diagonally from her. “How are we feeling today? Any aches or discomfort?”

Maya looked up from her tea, offering a slight nod. Her voice, when it finally came, was quiet, raspy from disuse, but startlingly clear. “My legs feel lighter,” she murmured, her eyes dropping back to her teacup.

Julian felt a sharp pang in his chest—not of pain, but of profound relief. Hearing her speak actual sentences after hours of near-silence felt like watching a frozen river finally begin to thaw beneath the spring sun. Aris nodded approvingly, pulling a small penlight from his pocket to check her pupil dilation and overall alertness. Everything was stabilizing physically, but the psychological maze remained entirely unmapped.

“That’s wonderful, Maya,” Aris said gently, pocketing the light. He then looked across the table at Julian, his expression turning serious. “Julian, we need to discuss the next steps. Legally and medically, the authorities are going to have questions. The moment we file her return with the NYPD and federal agencies, the media circus will begin. We need to be prepared for an avalanche of inquiries.”

“Let them ask,” Julian said coldly, his jaw tightening as he set his coffee mug down with a firm thud. “For three years, the police departments and federal task forces did nothing. They closed her file after eighteen months, labeling it a cold case with no active leads. They don’t deserve answers until I know what happened to her.”

“I understand your anger, Julian, but you can’t hide her indefinitely,” Aris reasoned calmly, leaning forward with his elbows on the table. “She will need documentation, a proper medical record, and eventually a safe environment away from the prying eyes of reporters. More importantly, we need to understand how she survived. Children don’t simply vanish into the Manhattan underground and reappear three years later untouched by harsher elements.”

Maya suddenly set her teacup down with a sharp clink. The sound silenced both men instantly. She turned her head toward the heavy oak front door of the penthouse suite, her body going rigidly still. A moment later, a distinct, muffled chime echoed from the private elevator foyer. Someone had just used a master code to bypass the lobby security and ascend directly to their floor. Julian instantly stood up, his hand sliding inside his jacket pocket to grip the cold metal of his phone, while Ajax rose to his full height, letting out a low, ominous rumble from deep within his chest.
