Title: The Bitter Olive / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5

The glow of Julian’s smartphone illuminated his sharp facial features as he composed the text message to Elena. Every word was chosen with surgical precision, designed to push her psychological buttons without raising immediate suspicion. “The evening is quiet, Elena. The appetizers are standard, but the company leaves much to be desired. Waiting for you to explain your sudden exit.” He hit send, watching the delivery receipt tick over instantly.

Across town in her high-rise penthouse overlooking the city skyline, Elena Vance was pacing across a Moroccan rug, her phone clutched so tightly her knuckles were stark white. When the notification chime broke the tense silence of her living room, she lunged for the device. Reading Julian’s message, a smug, victorious smile spread across her red lips. He was still sitting at the table. He hadn't noticed the altered olive. To Elena’s distorted logic, her superiority was once again confirmed; Julian was simply another chess piece moving exactly where she pushed him. She tapped out a swift reply: “Give it ten minutes, Julian. You’ll find the evening gets much more interesting.”

Back at the restaurant, Julian felt his phone vibrate against the wood of the table. He read the screen, a cold smile touching the corners of his mouth. Ten minutes. That was all the time they had before Elena’s spies—or Elena herself—returned to verify the kill or monitor the fallout.

Clara emerged from the back service hallway, having successfully secured the poisoned martini glass inside the manager’s heavy floor safe downstairs. She slipped back into her station behind Julian’s chair, her movements fluid and inconspicuous. She leaned down slightly, her voice barely audible over the faint jazz music playing through the restaurant’s overhead speakers.

“It’s locked in the safe,” Clara whispered, her eyes darting toward the front entrance. “Mr. Harrison is handling closing duties in the office, so he won’t check the safe until morning. What’s our next move?”

“Our next move is visibility,” Julian replied softly, raising his glass of Cabernet Sauvignon to his lips and taking a slow, deliberate sip. “Elena has operatives watching this restaurant. If we disappear into the back rooms now, they will know something is wrong. We need to act like two people discussing a routine business merger over dinner.”

Clara suppressed a nervous shudder and nodded, standing tall despite the throbbing ache in her bruised arm. She picked up an empty water pitcher, playing her part with remarkable composure. To anyone watching from the street-facing windows, they were simply an affluent executive and a diligent waitress reviewing the evening service. But beneath the surface, an elaborate counter-surveillance operation was underway.

Julian’s mind raced through his corporate directory. Elena could not have engineered a chemical-laced olive without professional help. That specific compound—a fast-acting, untraceable neurotoxin typically used in agricultural research—required specialized clearance to acquire. That meant someone inside Sterling Enterprises’ biotech subsidiary was on Elena’s payroll. The conspiracy was deeper than a disgruntled business partner; it was an internal corporate coup. And tonight, Julian intended to find out who inside his own empire had signed his death warrant.
