Title: The Bitter Olive / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13

Within fifteen minutes, the heavy glass doors of the R&D facility echoed with the rhythmic, heavy boots of federal marshals and local law enforcement. David Vance led the team into Pendelton’s office, flanked by uniform officers who moved with professional precision. The nightmare that had begun with a shattered mahogany restaurant door and a poisoned martini glass was finally drawing to a formal, inescapable conclusion.

Elena Vance stood frozen in the center of the room, her designer blazer suddenly feeling like a straitjacket as two female officers stepped forward to read her rights. She offered no resistance, her eyes glazed over with bitter defeat as the steel handcuffs clicked securely around her wrists.

Dr. Arthur Pendelton didn't wait to be restrained. He sat quietly at his desk, his head bowed, his hands folded neatly in front of him as federal agents placed him under arrest for industrial espionage, conspiracy, and attempted murder.

Julian watched the arrests with a neutral expression, feeling neither triumph nor anger—only the cold satisfaction of justice restored through patience and preparation. He turned his attention to Clara, who stood quietly near the doorway, clutching her bruised arm as the adrenaline finally began to ebb from her system.

“Are you alright?” Julian asked softly, stepping closer to the young waitress.

Clara nodded slowly, a genuine, tired smile touching her lips. “I’m okay, Mr. Sterling. Just... ready to go home and sleep for a week.”

“Not yet,” Julian said, a subtle warmth entering his tone for the first time all evening. “First, we ensure your medical expenses are fully covered, and second, we visit the executive suite downstairs to discuss your future career options at Sterling Enterprises.”

Clara blinked in surprise. “My career options?”

“A person with your observational skills, tactical composure, and moral courage belongs in corporate security, not serving appetizers,” Julian stated firmly. “That is, if you’re willing to accept a promotion.”

As the last of the police escorts led Elena and Pendelton out toward the private elevators, Clara looked at Julian, then down at her white button-up shirt. The stain of the evening’s chaos was still visible, but the path ahead was entirely clear.
