Chapter 11

The elevator doors opened directly onto the top-floor research facility of Sterling Biotech, revealing a sterile world of gleaming white floors, humming server racks, and floor-to-ceiling glass laboratories. The lighting was dimmed to a soft, eerie blue, casting long shadows across the experimental cleanrooms. Julian stepped out first, his stride commanding and absolute, with Clara close behind him like a seasoned operative.
They moved swiftly down the central corridor toward the executive R&D suite where Dr. Arthur Pendelton maintained his private office. As they rounded the corner, they saw a strip of warm light spilling out from beneath Pendelton’s door. Voices drifted out into the hallway—one frantic and shrill, the other calm and calculating.
“I told you Julian wouldn't fall for a simple restaurant stunt!” Elena Vance’s voice echoed sharply through the quiet lab. She was pacing the length of Pendelton’s office, her sparkly silver dress replaced by a sharp black blazer, though her hair still carried the elaborate styling from earlier in the evening. “Marcus lost his tracking signal twenty minutes ago. Julian is either dead or he’s onto us!”
Dr. Arthur Pendelton sat behind his polished oak desk, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses with infuriating calm. He was a distinguished man in his late fifties with silvering hair and the detached demeanor of a mad scientist wrapped in corporate legitimacy. “Calm down, Elena. Marcus is a professional. Even if Julian survived, the toxin leaves no trace in standard autopsies. The board will approve our emergency restructuring proposal by morning, and Sterling Biotech will be ours.”
“You won't be owning anything by morning, Arthur,” a cool, authoritative voice cut through the room like a razor blade.
Elena and Arthur whipped their heads toward the open doorway. Julian stood framed in the entrance, his charcoal-grey suit immaculate, his expression carved from stone. Clara stepped up beside him, holding her smartphone high, its screen recording every second of their panicked expressions.

Elena’s face drained of all color, her lips parting in silent shock. “Julian... you’re... how are you alive?”
“By not trusting my drinks to amateurs,” Julian replied smoothly, walking into the office with deliberate, unhurried steps. “And by having colleagues who know how to read security feeds.”
