Chapter 3: Shadows of the Past

Alexander brought Elena to his private estate on the coastal cliffs, far away from the Sterling family's influence. A team of top medical specialists tended to her injuries, but the wounds on her soul ran much deeper. For years, Elena had suffered under the grand illusion that she had to earn the love of her maternal grandparents, only to be treated as a pariah.

As night fell, Alexander sat beside her bed, holding a warm cup of tea.

""Why didn't you come sooner?"" Elena asked quietly, her eyes fixed on the rain washing over the windowpane.

""I tried, Elena,"" Alexander said, his eyes filled with profound remorse. ""Your mother made me promise to keep you safe from afar until you were old enough to see their true nature. I thought leaving you near them would keep you protected under their name. I was wrong. I let my pride keep me away, and you paid the price.""

Elena looked at her father’s weathered face, recognizing the same quiet pain she had carried her entire life. For the first time, she realized she wasn't alone in her grief.
