Chapter 9: The Ghost in the Machine

Inside the private study, Stephen’s fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard of Eleanor’s vintage mainframe terminal. The green phosphor glow reflected off his sweat-beaded forehead as the high-frequency interceptor hummed violently against the side of the machine, downloading blocks of encrypted files.

A soft chime signaled the successful extraction of the master ledger. Stephen exhaled a shuddering breath, reaching out to unplug the device. But as he pulled the cable free, the computer monitor abruptly flashed a bright, blinding crimson, replacing the data streams with a single line of bold white text:
ACCESS LOGGED: UNAUTHORIZED DOWNLOAD DETECTED. SYSTEM LOCKDOWN IN THREE MINUTES.
Stephen cursed under his breath, realizing too late that the interceptor had been a tripwire designed specifically to catch him. He spun around toward the balcony doors just as the heavy oak study doors burst open.
Eleanor stood in the threshold, perfectly composed, wearing a silk dressing gown over her white dress. She didn't look angry; she looked profoundly disappointed, like a schoolteacher dealing with a slow and incorrigible pupil.
"You were always so painfully predictable, Stephen," Eleanor said, her voice cutting through the silent room with effortless authority. "Arthur tried the exact same maneuver in nineteen-ninety-two. He thought he could outsmart the foundation by stealing the ledgers."
Stephen gripped the edge of the mahogany desk, his knuckles turning white. "You set this up. The dinner, the card, the audit trap—you wanted me to try and steal the files so you could hand me to federal prosecutors on a silver platter."
Eleanor stepped into the room, her footsteps completely silent on the thick Persian rug. "I didn't set you up, Stephen. I simply gave you enough rope to build your own gallows. You wanted the power of the Vance name without the discipline required to maintain it. You treated our legacy like a personal ATM while hollowing out the core assets through sheer incompetence."
"I kept the empire afloat while you sat in this dark room playing God!" Stephen shouted, the restrained veneer finally cracking as rage and panic boiled over.

"Silence," Eleanor commanded, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper that silenced him instantly. "You have never built anything in your life. You only consumed."
Behind Eleanor in the doorway, Julian slipped quietly into the room, followed closely by Chloe, who looked shell-shocked. The trap had closed completely, and all the players were now gathered in the center of the web.
