Chapter 13: Dawn on the Estate

The morning sun crested the horizon, painting the manicured lawns of the Vance estate in shades of gold and amber. The dew glistened heavily on the manicured hedges, making the sprawling grounds look pristine, untouched, and entirely indifferent to the human drama that had just played out within its walls.

Stephen and Chloe stepped out through the grand front doors into the crisp morning air. The hired town car idled quietly at the base of the stone steps, its exhaust pluming softly in the cool breeze.

Julian followed them out, stepping down to open the rear door of the vehicle. He handed Stephen a slim, cream-colored envelope bearing the official embossed seal of the Vance Trust legal counsel.

"Your transfer confirmations and passport clearances," Julian said, his voice steady and professional. "The Zurich accounts are fully active. You will find the transition seamless."

Stephen took the envelope, holding it in his hand for a moment before looking up at the elderly servant who had witnessed decades of family warfare. "Thank you, Julian. For the records, and for the perspective."

Julian bowed his head slightly. "Take care of each other, Mr. Vance. Outside these walls, life requires actual work."

Chloe slid into the back seat of the town car, the cool leather seating receiving her with quiet luxury. She looked out the window at the imposing facade of the mansion, watching the massive stone pillars catch the morning light. The gilded cage that had held them captive for so long now looked like what it truly was: a cold, beautiful mausoleum.

Stephen climbed in beside her, pulling the heavy car door shut with a solid, satisfying thud. He placed the envelope on the center console between them and reached across to take Chloe’s hand. Her fingers intertwined with his naturally, without hesitation or fear.

The driver put the car into gear, and the tires crunched softly against the gravel driveway as they began the long descent away from the estate. Neither of them looked back. The massive iron gates of the property swung open automatically as the vehicle approached, parting to let them pass out into the wider world.

For the first time in their lives, the road ahead had no map dictated by Eleanor Vance. The horizon stretched out wide, vast, and entirely unwritten.
