Chapter 6: The Gallery of Ghosts

Midnight approached with agonizing slowness as Stephen and Chloe navigated the labyrinthine corridors of the upper estate. The mansion was wrapped in an unnatural hush, the staff having long since retreated to their quarters. Only the soft ticking of grandfather clocks punctuated the heavy darkness.

They reached the portrait gallery, a long, vaulted hall lined with massive oil paintings of Vance ancestors dating back to the nineteenth century. The gilded frames caught the pale moonlight filtering through the tall arched windows, casting eerie, distorted reflections across the parquet floor.

At the far end of the gallery hung the centerpiece of the collection: a life-sized portrait of Eleanor Vance painted thirty years ago, standing proudly in the exact same white dress she wore tonight, holding the family charter in her hand. Her painted eyes seemed to follow them with an expression of cold, perpetual surveillance.

Stephen stopped directly in front of the portrait. He reached out and pressed his palm against the ornate wooden molding of the frame. With a muffled, mechanical click, the massive canvas swung inward on hidden hinges, revealing a recessed wall safe covered by a heavy steel biometric plate.

"This is it," Stephen whispered, glancing back down the dark hallway to ensure they were still alone. "The private archive. Everything Eleanor used to build the empire—and everything she used to bury those who stood in her way."

Chloe stepped closer, her eyes scanning the digital keypad and retinal scanner glowing softly in the dark recess. "And how do we open it without her fingerprint and her signet ring?"

Stephen pulled a small electronic device from his pocket—a high-frequency signal interceptor he had used years ago during hostile corporate takeovers. "We don't bypass it. We clone her digital signature from the security console in her private study while she sleeps. But to do that, we need to get inside the East Wing without tripping the perimeter alarms."

The risk was astronomical. If caught, Eleanor wouldn't just cut their funds; she would ensure they were cast out into literal destitution with criminal charges attached to their names. Yet, the alternative was worse. Submission meant becoming ghosts in their own lives, wandering the fringes of a world that had discarded them.

Chloe took a deep breath, smoothing the front of her green dress. Her earlier fear had entirely crystallized into a sharp, cold determination. "Lead the way, Stephen. Let's go see what the queen is hiding in her study."
