Chapter 14: The Final Submission

The brightly lit lobby of the federal courthouse felt like a sanctuary after the terrifying dash through the dark alleys. Soaked from the rain and shivering, Julian and Clara burst through the security gates, panting heavily as armed guards reached instinctively for their holsters before recognizing Julian’s panicked expression.

“Hold on! State your business!” the guard demanded.

“We need to see Assistant United States Attorney Vance immediately! It’s an emergency!” Julian yelled, pulling the encrypted flash drive out of his wet jacket pocket and holding it up like a shield. “We have the secondary ledger. People are trying to kill us for it!”

Ten minutes later, they sat across from Vance in a brightly lit, secure conference room deep within the federal building. A cup of steaming black coffee sat untouched in front of Clara, while Vance stared intently at her laptop screen as the decrypted files from the flash drive loaded in real time.

Vance’s face hardened as she scrolled through the list of shell companies, illegal transfers, and the specific five-million-dollar payout directed to her own brother, Thomas Vance. She closed the laptop lid with a sharp snap, her eyes flashing with a dangerous mix of betrayal and absolute professional fury.

“My brother,” Vance whispered, the words tasting like ash in her mouth. “He told me he was clean. He swore the zoning board was legitimate.”

“He wasn't clean, Vance. None of them were,” Julian said, leaning forward across the table, his burgundy jacket damp and wrinkled. “My parents were just the middle management for a city-wide bribery ring. The men who broke into our apartment tonight—they weren't common criminals. They were sent to retrieve this drive before it reached your desk.”

Vance stood up, walking briskly toward the conference room door and pulling it open. She gave rapid, authoritative orders to two federal agents standing guard outside. “I want immediate arrest warrants drawn up for Thomas Vance and three members of the city council on charges of racketeering, bribery, and obstruction of justice. Use the encrypted drive files as probable cause. Move now.”

She turned back to Julian and Clara, her expression softening into one of profound respect. “You two risked your lives bringing this here. You realize that, right? Once these warrants are executed, there’s no turning back for anyone involved.”

“That’s all we ever wanted,” Clara said quietly, placing her hand over Julian’s. “The truth.”

“You’ll need protective custody until the arrests are finalized,” Vance added, reaching for her phone. “Just to be safe.”

Julian nodded mutely. The storm was finally reaching its apex, and the lightning was about to strike the highest towers in the city.
