Chapter 13: The Uninvited Guest

A sharp, violent knock rattled the front door of the tiny apartment, shattering the tense silence of the room. Julian and Clara froze. The clock on the wall ticked loudly—11:42 PM.

“Open up! We know you’re in there!” a gruff, unfamiliar voice shouted from the hallway, accompanied by the heavy thud of a shoulder hitting the exterior wooden door.

Julian sprang from his chair, adrenaline surging through his veins. “Who is it?” he yelled, his voice cracking slightly.

“U.S. Marshals Service! Open the door immediately!”

Clara looked at the laptop screen, then at Julian, shaking her head frantically. “Federal Marshals don't bang on doors like thugs at midnight, Julian. That’s not official.”

Another heavy crash echoed through the room as the deadbolt splintered, the door bursting open to reveal two men dressed in dark tactical gear, their faces obscured by black balaclavas. One of them stepped into the tiny kitchen, holding a suppressed pistol aimed directly at Julian’s chest.

“Step away from the computer,” the lead intruder ordered, his voice flat, mechanical, and entirely devoid of emotion.

Julian didn't hesitate. Grabbing the flash drive from the USB port, he shoved it into his pocket while lunging sideways, knocking a heavy wooden chair into the path of the advancing intruder. The man stumbled, his gun discharging with a muffled thud, the bullet splintering the wall just inches above the kitchen counter.

“Run!” Julian screamed to Clara.

Clara didn't hesitate. She bolted toward the bathroom window that led out onto the rusted fire escape, pushing the glass open as cold autumn air rushed into the room. Julian scrambled after her, dodging a grasping hand from the second intruder as he grabbed his jacket from the back of the chair.

Clara slipped through the window first, her silver silk dress catching briefly on the latch before tearing as she dropped down onto the metal landing. Julian followed closely behind, pulling the window shut behind them just as a heavy boot kicked against the glass from the inside, shattering the pane into a thousand glittering shards.

They raced down the rusted metal stairs of the fire escape, their boots clanging loudly against the rungs as they hit the dark alleyway below. Rain had begun to drizzle, slicking the asphalt and casting greasy reflections from the streetlights overhead.

“Which way?” Clara gasped, clutching her torn dress as they sprinted toward the main thoroughfare.

“The precinct!” Julian shouted over the sound of their own ragged breathing. “If we can reach the federal building, we’re safe!”

They tore around the corner, blending into the late-night foot traffic of the city center, their hearts pounding a frantic rhythm against their ribs. They had the evidence, but the hunters were no longer hiding in the shadows. The real war had begun.
