Chapter 9 - The House of Cards

The shock of Maya’s words hit Eleanor Vance like a physical blow, knocking the remaining wind straight out of her lungs. Her knees buckled slightly, but she caught herself against the rough brick wall, her manicured fingers scraping against the mortar. The cold reality of her situation settled over her like a shroud: her wealth, her meticulously guarded social status, and her marriage were evaporating in real time, all because of an arrogant impulse in a crowded bistro.
"That's a lie," Eleanor muttered, though her voice lacked any real conviction, sounding hollow and broken even to her own ears.
"Richard is a respected member of the financial commission. He doesn't engage in... whatever illicit nonsense you're trying to fabricate."
Detective Marcus let out a short, dry laugh, pulling his phone from his trench coat pocket. The screen flashed with an incoming secure call. He swiped the screen and pressed it to his ear without breaking eye contact with Eleanor.
"Go ahead, Miller," Marcus said into the phone.
A tinny, urgent voice echoed from the speaker in the quiet alley.
"We've secured the primary server at Vance Enterprises, Detective," the voice reported clearly.
"Found multiple encrypted shell accounts registered under maiden names and offshore holdings. The transfer logs match the exact date Arthur Chen was terminated five years ago—plus a systematic embezzlement trail pointing straight to Mrs. Vance’s personal art acquisitions."
Eleanor felt the room spin. Her art acquisitions—the rare paintings, the museum-grade sculptures she bragged about at charity galas—were bought with stolen capital. The foundations of her entire gilded cage were built on sand, and the tide had finally come in.
"You're destroying an innocent family," Eleanor hissed desperately, trying one last pathetic attempt at moral high ground.
"You're ruining a legacy built on hard work and dedication!"
Arthur Chen stepped forward, his eyes blazing with a quiet, righteous fury that silenced her instantly.
"Hard work?" Arthur repeated, his voice dangerously low.
"You wouldn't know the meaning of hard work if it bit you on the ankle, Eleanor. You spent your entire life stepping on the necks of people who kept your house clean, cooked your meals, and fixed your plumbing, treating us like disposable trash while you sipped wine in the parlor."
He gestured to Maya, who stood beside him with her hands clasped calmly behind her back, wearing her pristine white shirt and black bistro vest like a suit of armor.
"You thought Maya was just another waitress you could break today," Arthur continued.
"You thought she was defenseless. But you forgot one simple rule of the world, Eleanor: the people you abuse eventually talk to each other. And the security cameras always remember."
Eleanor opened her mouth to retort, but no sound came out. Her throat felt bone-dry. She looked at Detective Marcus, whose expression had hardened into absolute professional finality as he ended the phone call and stepped directly into her personal space, pulling the steel handcuffs free.
"Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and filing a false police report," Marcus recited calmly, his voice echoing off the brick walls.
