Chapter 10 - The Walk of Shame

The heavy metal cuffs clicked shut around Eleanor Vance’s wrists with a sharp, metallic snap that echoed loudly in the narrow service alley. The cold steel bit into her skin, contrasting sharply with the expensive fabric of her dark double-breasted coat and the gleam of her gold buttons. For fifty years, Eleanor had viewed herself as untouchable—a queen sitting atop a mountain of wealth and social privilege. Now, as Detective Marcus guided her toward the unmarked police sedan parked at the curb, she was nothing more than a disgraced suspect in handcuffs.

A small crowd of curious onlookers had gathered near the bistro entrance, drawn by the commotion and the flashing red and blue lights of a newly arrived second police cruiser. Among them stood the restaurant manager, watching with quiet vindication, and several patrons who had witnessed her haughty behavior earlier that afternoon.

Eleanor kept her head down, her blonde bob falling forward to shield her face from the stares of the public. The humiliation burned hotter than any physical pain. The whispers of the crowd buzzed like angry hornets in her ears.

"Is that her? The woman who tripped the waitress?"

"I saw her inside earlier. Absolutely vile creature."

"Serves her right. You can't treat people like garbage and expect to get away with it forever."

Detective Marcus opened the rear door of the cruiser and gently guided Eleanor inside. As she slid across the vinyl seat, she caught a glimpse of herself in the tinted window—her mascara slightly smeared, her pearl earrings askew, and her aristocratic pride completely shattered.

As the door slammed shut, sealing her inside the small, sterile compartment of the police vehicle, she looked through the front windshield and saw Maya and Arthur standing together on the sidewalk. Maya wasn't smiling or gloating; she simply stood with her arms at her sides, watching the car with an expression of quiet, profound closure.

The police cruiser pulled away from the curb, merging into the heavy Manhattan traffic. Eleanor sat in the backseat, her cuffed hands resting awkwardly in her lap, her mind racing with a terrifying question. If Richard was already being interrogated and their assets were frozen, who was going to post her bail?

She reached out with her cuffed wrists, trying to tap on the partition separating the front and back seats, but the officer in the front ignored her completely, keeping his eyes fixed on the road ahead.

Minutes later, the vehicle turned sharply into the subterranean parking garage of the precinct. As the car came to a complete halt and the engine died, the rear door swung open, revealing not a sympathetic defense attorney, but a tall, imposing figure waiting in the shadows of the concrete pillar.

It was Richard—her husband—also wearing handcuffs, escorted by two federal agents in dark suits.
