Chapter 11 - The Reunion in the Shadows

The subterranean parking garage of the downtown precinct was damp, echoing, and cast in the harsh, flickering yellow light of overhead fluorescent tubes. Eleanor Vance stepped out of the police cruiser, her cuffed wrists feeling heavier by the second. As she regained her footing on the oil-stained concrete, her eyes locked onto the figure standing ten feet away under a concrete pillar.
It was Richard. Her husband of twenty-five years, the pillar of their social circle, the man whose wealth and influence had supposedly shielded their family from consequence for decades.
He looked ruined. His dark suit jacket was unbuttoned, his white shirt collar was crumpled, and his black tie hung loosely around his neck. The arrogant confidence that had defined his boardroom demeanor was entirely gone, replaced by a hollow, defeated stare. Two federal agents stood on either side of him, holding their own case files under their arms.
"Richard?" Eleanor breathed, her voice trembling as she took an involuntary step forward before the officer behind her gently halted her movement.
"What... what is happening? Why are you in cuffs?"
Richard turned his head slowly, his eyes meeting hers. There was no warmth in his gaze, only a deep, bitter resentment that cut Eleanor sharper than any knife.
"It's over, Eleanor," Richard said, his voice flat and devoid of its usual booming authority.
"The shell companies, the embezzlement, the offshore accounts—the federal investigators didn't just find the paper trail. They found the backup hard drives in your private study at the estate. You kept every single incriminating receipt in your desk drawer."
Eleanor’s breath hitched. She remembered the mahogany desk in her study, the locked drawer where she kept her personal ledger—the one containing records of every bribe, every payoff, and every silenced employee, including Arthur Chen. She had always believed that locking the wooden drawer was enough to keep her secrets safe from the world.
"You... you knew about the drawer?" Eleanor whispered, horror creeping up her spine.
"I didn't just know about it, Eleanor," Richard spat back, his voice rising in bitter frustration.
"I used it to secure our lifestyle because you refused to stop spending! Every auction, every charity gala, every designer coat you wore—you demanded perfection while building our entire foundation on quicksand. And the moment you decided to bully a waitress in a Manhattan bistro over a cup of coffee, you blew the whole damn operation wide open!"
One of the federal agents stepped forward, clearing his throat to cut through the domestic argument echoing off the concrete walls.
"Mrs. Vance, Mr. Vance," the agent said smoothly, holding up a digital tablet displaying a master list of seized assets.
"Your primary residence, all secondary properties, corporate holdings, and personal bank accounts have been placed under federal receivership effective immediately. You are both facing federal wire fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy charges."
Eleanor felt the concrete floor seem to drop away beneath her heels. Her entire world—the wealth, the prestige, the clothes, the status—was gone, stripped away in less than twenty-four hours because of a petty act of malice.
Before she could speak, a familiar voice echoed from the entrance of the parking garage ramp.
