Chapter 12 - The Midnight Injunction

The dial tone hummed monotonously against Clara’s ear before cutting out entirely. She slowly lowered her hand, the smartphone slipping slightly in her sweaty palm. The silence of the master suite felt heavier now, pressing down on her shoulders like a physical weight. The documents in the metal lockbox stared back up at her, glowing faintly in the dim twilight filtering through the dusty windows.

She wasn't Clara Vance. She was nobody. A legal fiction fabricated to launder an estate built on stolen ground.

Before she could process the full, staggering scope of the betrayal, the sharp glare of headlights swept across the bedroom ceiling. Clara hurried to the window, parting the heavy velvet curtains just enough to look down at the street below.

A sleek black town car had pulled up directly in front of the Oak Street house, its engine idling quietly. The back door opened, and a tall, impeccably dressed woman in a charcoal trench coat stepped out, followed by a younger man carrying a heavy leather briefcase. They didn't knock on the front door. Instead, the woman walked straight up the walkway, pulled a set of master keys from her designer handbag, and unlocked the front door with practiced ease.

Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat. How did a stranger have the master keys to a house that the federal government had just returned to her custody less than an hour ago?

Footsteps began ascending the grand staircase—slow, deliberate, and entirely unafraid.

Clara dropped the lockbox lid shut, sliding the metal box back into the hidden cavity beneath the floorboards. She quickly pulled the oak floorboard back into place, dropping the Persian rug over it just as a heavy knock sounded on the open door of the master suite.

"Ms. Vance," a cool, modulated voice called out from the hallway. "Or should I say... whatever name is on that birth certificate you just pulled out of the floor."

Clara stood up slowly, turning around to face the doorway. The woman in the charcoal trench coat stood in the threshold, her expression completely unreadable beneath the harsh glare of the hallway light. She wasn't carrying a weapon, but the cold, calculating look in her eyes carried far more danger than any physical threat.

"Who let you in?" Clara demanded, her voice steady despite the adrenaline hammering in her veins. "This property is under federal seal. You're trespassing."

The woman let out a low, humorless chuckle, stepping fully into the master suite. "Federal seal? Ms. Vance—or rather, Abigail—the federal government only acts on the information provided to them. And right now, the information in my briefcase supersedes any magistrate's order you managed to secure this afternoon."

The woman reached into her trench coat, pulled out a thick stack of embossed legal documents, and tossed them carelessly onto the unmade bed behind Clara.

"Read it," the woman said smoothly. "That’s the emergency injunction granted ten minutes ago by the State Supreme Court. The estate of your supposed parents has been frozen pending a hereditary legitimacy claim filed by your true, biological kin."

Clara stared at the documents on the bed, her mind racing as every single piece of her victory shattered into dust.

"My true kin," Clara repeated, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You mean the people who abandoned me thirty years ago."

The woman smiled—a sharp, predatory curve of the lips. "They didn't abandon you, Abigail. They sold your rights to the highest bidder. And now, they want their property back."

Before Clara could reply, the younger man with the briefcase stepped into the doorway, holding a smartphone up to his ear with a smug grin.

"It's done," the man said loudly into the phone, looking straight at Clara. "The sheriff's department is twenty minutes away with a warrant to evict the unauthorized squatter."
