Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Betrayal

The autumn wind whipped dry leaves across the weathered floorboards of the front porch, carrying the sharp scent of damp earth and bitter resentment. Clara stood rigidly in her light grey button-down shirt and purple pants, clutching a thin yellow folder to her chest like a shield. Across from her, Maya—dressed in a crisp green blouse and khaki pants—loomed with tight lips and narrowed eyes. Mark, standing beside Maya in his dark blue polo shirt, shifted uncomfortably, his gaze fixed on the peeling white paint beneath his shoes. Further back, Elena sat in a purple wicker chair, watching the confrontation unfold with a chilling, detached silence. Clara’s chest heaved with shallow, controlled breaths, the humiliation of the past hour burning deep beneath her skin. She pointed the corner of the yellow folder directly at Maya’s chest, her voice trembling with suppressed fury.
"You told me I wasn't welcome in my own house!" Clara shouted, the words tearing out of her throat with raw, unfiltered pain.
Maya didn't flinch. Instead, a cold, predatory smirk crossed her face. She took a deliberate step forward, invading Clara’s personal space. Without warning, Maya raised her hand and shoved the palm of her hand hard against Clara’s face, snapping her head back.
"Get a grip, Clara. You don't live here anymore," Maya hissed, her voice laced with venom.
Clara staggered backward, stumbling against the porch railing. The yellow folder slipped slightly, its contents rustling against the cold air. She pulled back, her skin stinging, her eyes wide with a volatile mix of profound hurt and blazing outrage. She refused to cower. Standing her ground, she gripped the folder tighter, her knuckles turning bone-white. She shouted back over the whistling wind, her voice echoing down the empty suburban street.
"I paid for it and I sold it!" Clara yelled, her veins throbbing at her temples.
The tension on the porch skyrocketed, the air thick with unspoken betrayal and decades of family rot. Maya stepped in again, her face inches from Clara’s, daring her to speak another word. But Clara didn’t look away. Instead, she slowly opened the yellow folder, revealing a single, folded document at the very top. Mark’s eyes went wide as he recognized the letterhead.

"Look at the date, Maya," Clara whispered fiercely, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. "You just evicted the legal owner of the mortgage company that holds your deed."
