Chapter 10 - Beneath the Floorboards

The brass key ring felt cold and heavy in Clara’s palm as Agent Miller stepped back down the porch stairs and climbed into his unmarked sedan, leaving her alone on the porch. The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruiser faded into the distance as the vehicle turned the corner of Oak Street, plunging the property back into a heavy, eerie silence.

Clara turned the brass key in the front door lock, the old mechanism turning with a familiar, heavy metallic thud. She stepped back into the house, closing the heavy oak door behind her to shut out the biting autumn wind. The interior was shrouded in the dim, dusky shadows of late afternoon. Dust motes danced lazily in the slivers of light cutting through the venetian blinds.

She didn't stop in the foyer. Guided by Agent Miller’s warning, she made her way past the parlor, her boots clicking softly against the hardwood floor, and began climbing the grand staircase toward the master suite on the second floor. Every step creaked under her weight, sounding like old bones protesting a long-overdue reckoning.

The master suite smelled of preserved lavender and mothballs. It was the room her parents had shared for over forty years—a room Maya and Mark had allegedly converted into a guest suite, though judging by the pristine, untouched state of the heavy velvet curtains, no one had slept here in years.

Clara walked straight to the center of the room, kneeling beside the large Persian rug that covered the center planks. Grabbing the edge of the heavy rug, she pulled it back with a sharp tug, revealing a section of wide oak floorboards that looked slightly newer than the rest of the floor.

One of the boards had a small, circular brass ring embedded flush against the wood—a hidden compartment Clara had never known existed.

Her heart hammered against her ribs. With trembling fingers, she reached down, hooked her index finger through the brass ring, and pulled upward. With a dry, screeching groan of protesting nails, the floorboard popped loose, revealing a dark, rectangular cavity carved into the joists beneath.

Inside the cavity sat a single, metal lockbox wrapped in thick plastic sheeting, sealed with red wax bearing the stamp of a legal firm Clara didn't recognize.

She carefully lifted the lockbox out of the recess, resting it on the polished wood floor. Her hands hovered over the red wax seal. She knew that breaking this seal meant stepping past a point of no return—uncovering whatever secret her parents had gone to such desperate lengths to keep buried beneath the very floorboards of their home.

Taking a deep breath, Clara pressed her thumb hard against the red wax, shattering it into jagged pieces. She lifted the lid of the lockbox.

Inside lay a thick stack of yellowed letters tied with a black ribbon, and right on top of them, a notarized birth certificate bearing a name Clara had never seen before—alongside a legal document stating that the house on Oak Street did not belong to her family at all.
