Chapter 3 - The Brass Key

The heavy iron door of the patrol car clicked shut behind Evelyn, but she didn’t look distressed. Instead, she pressed the brass key against the glass partition, watching Clara and Richard huddle anxiously near the porch steps. Officer Davis slid into the driver’s seat, flicking off the overhead lights before turning to face her.

“Alright, Ms. Vance. Talk. Why are you attacking your own father’s memorial service with lawn equipment?” the officer asked, resting his pen against his open notepad.

“Because that wasn’t a memorial service. It was a yard sale before the body is even cold,” Evelyn replied, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “They were clearing out his office. Specifically, his floor safe.”

Outside, Richard was frantically talking on his cell phone, his posture rigid. Clara had retreated indoors, presumably to dry off, leaving Richard alone to manage the impending fallout.

“Do you have proof of a break-in or theft?” Officer Davis asked, his tone shifting from casual to professional.

“Proof?” Evelyn let out a bitter breath. “My father changed his will three days before he died. He left everything to the historical society and local animal shelters. Not a dime to Clara, and certainly nothing to Richard’s shell corporation.”

The officer paused, pen hovering over the paper. “That’s a serious accusation. Do you have a copy of this new will?”

Evelyn smiled slowly, tapping the brass key against her palm. “This key opens the safety deposit box at the downtown branch. The original will is inside. And if Clara and Richard get into that house tonight, it will vanish forever.”

Officer Davis stared at her for a long moment, realizing the domestic dispute he had been called to was actually the opening salvo of a much larger war. He radioed dispatch to hold off on formal charges while he investigated the property dispute.

Back on the lawn, Richard finally noticed the police cruiser driving away without Evelyn inside, and his face drained entirely of color.
