Chapter 14 - The Vault of Secrets

The heavy vault door swung open with a deep, echoing chime, releasing a puff of cold, dry air that smelled of old paper and history. Inside, rows upon rows of steel safety deposit boxes stretched endlessly into the subterranean security archive.
An armed federal marshal walked beside Evelyn down the narrow aisle, holding a flashlight that cut through the dim shadows.
“Box 409,” Evelyn whispered, stopping before a heavy brass-plated door embedded in the steel wall.
She slid the brass key into the lock. It turned with a satisfying, buttery click. The small safety deposit box slid outward on greased rails, revealing a thick stack of legal documents tied with a red ribbon, alongside a small, encrypted flash drive.
Evelyn pulled the documents out, her hands trembling as she flipped open the top page. It was the original, unaltered will naming the historical society as the sole beneficiary of Arthur Vance’s estate, signed and notarized just four days before his death. Beneath it lay bank transfer logs detailing millions of dollars siphoned systematically by Richard and Marcus into offshore accounts.
“It’s all here,” Evelyn breathed, a tear finally escaping down her mud-stained cheek—not of sorrow, but of absolute vindication.
The marshal peered over her shoulder, his expression turning grim. “This constitutes federal wire fraud and grand larceny. With these logs, we can freeze every single asset connected to the shell corporation by morning.”
Suddenly, the secure intercom on the archive wall crackled to life, interrupting the quiet hum of the vault.
“Attention archive personnel. We have an unauthorized override request coming from the primary administrative terminal upstairs,” a dispatcher’s voice announced over the speaker. “A court order signed by Judge Miller is demanding immediate remote access to Box 409.”
Evelyn froze. Judge Miller was completely in Clara’s pocket.

“They’re trying to wipe the digital backup remotely,” the marshal said, his eyes widening as he rushed toward the terminal at the end of the aisle. “If they execute that override before we upload these physical logs, the entire case gets wiped clean!”
