The red indicator light on the archive terminal blinked frantically, flashing a countdown timer from sixty seconds down as the remote override command executed its sequence.

“Hurry! Cut the external data line!” Evelyn shouted, hobbling down the aisle on her crutch as fast as her sprained ankle would allow.

The federal marshal didn’t hesitate. He drew his service pistol and fired a single, clean shot directly into the terminal’s main server housing, showering sparks across the concrete floor and instantly freezing the digital override sequence. The red light flickered twice and died, plunging the terminal into absolute darkness.

Upstairs, the administrative system crashed completely, locking Clara, Marcus, and Richard out of the Vance estate accounts forever.

Three days later, the morning sun broke over the manicured lawn of the Vance household, casting a warm, peaceful light across a newly restored memorial table adorned with fresh white lilies and undisturbed framed photographs of Arthur Vance.

Clara and Marcus were already behind bars, facing federal indictments for grand larceny, forgery, and conspiracy. Richard had fled the jurisdiction, his shell corporation dismantled by federal investigators before he could board a flight out of the country.

Evelyn stood on the front porch, wearing a simple white linen dress, her blonde hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders. The garden hose rested neatly coiled against the brick wall, its brass nozzle gleaming quietly in the morning light.
