Chapter 8

Two days later, Arthur packed a single suitcase before the authorities barred him from the property entirely. The neighborhood was dead quiet; curtains twitched across the street as neighbors watched federal and local investigators haul boxes of evidence from the front porch. The maroon dress Elena had worn was bagged as evidence, along with the remnants of the floral wallpaper and the personal items recovered from the hidden alcove.

Arthur drove out to the county hospital to visit Sarah. She was resting in a quiet, sunlit room on the third floor, her blonde hair clean and styled, though her frame remained terribly frail. She sat propped up against a stack of pillows, looking out the window at the distant tree line.

"How does the sky look?" Sarah asked softly as Arthur quietly pulled a chair up to her bedside.

"Big," Arthur replied, offering a gentle, melancholic smile. "Brighter than you probably remember."

Sarah turned her head, her eyes meeting his. "Elena thought she could erase me. She told me every single day through the vent that no one cared, that you had forgotten me, that the world had moved on."

"I never stopped wondering, Sarah," Arthur said, his voice thick with emotion. "Every time I walked down that hallway, I felt like something was wrong. But I let the fear of losing our status, our comfort, blind me to your suffering. I’m so sorry."

"We were both trapped, Arthur," Sarah said, reaching out to squeeze his hand. Her fingers were still thin and cold, but her grip carried genuine strength. "Elena didn't just build that wall for me. She built it for herself. She was terrified of what would happen if the truth came out about the company funds—the money she embezzled to maintain this lifestyle long before we ever moved in here."

Arthur’s eyes widened slightly. "Embezzled? I thought the audit showed..."

"The audit was forged," Sarah interrupted gently. "I found the ledgers five years ago. I tried to confront her, and that's when the accident happened on the highway—she pushed my car off the shoulder. When I survived with minor injuries, she dragged me back, drugged me, and sealed me in the wall before you even returned from your business trip."

The final puzzle pieces clicked into place with horrifying clarity. Elena wasn't just defending a social facade; she was covering up attempted murder and grand larceny, using psychological terrorism to keep Arthur compliant and distant.

"She’s facing decades behind bars," Arthur said grimly. "And I'm going to make sure every single piece of evidence is laid bare in court."
