As the gallery exhibition wound down and the last patrons filtered out into the cool evening air, the family stepped outside onto the cobblestone sidewalk. The streetlights flickered on, casting a gentle, welcoming glow across the historic storefronts of Portland. A cool autumn breeze swept in from the nearby harbor, carrying the crisp, clean scent of the ocean.
Arthur looked down the street, then turned to look at his family: Sarah, standing tall and serene; Leo, confident and grounded; and Clara, smiling brightly as she adjusted her jacket against the chill. The journey from the suffocating hallways of Elmwood Drive to this quiet coastal freedom had been long, painful, and fraught with difficult choices, but every single step had been worth it.
