Chapter 7

The morning sun cast long, harsh shadows across the living room, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. The police had cordoned off the hallway with yellow tape, turning their home into a crime scene. Arthur sat at the dining table with Detective Vance, a sharp investigator with tired eyes and a methodical demeanor. Sarah had been taken to the county hospital for evaluation and initial treatment, accompanied by a social worker and a medical team specializing in prolonged isolation trauma.

"Your wife isn't talking," Detective Vance said, tapping a pen against his notepad. "She’s invoking her right to counsel and demanding a high-powered defense team. But the physical evidence in the wall—the wiring modifications, the custom drywall paneling, the grocery receipts matching the timeline—tells a very clear story."

"I didn't know about the physical construction," Arthur reiterated, though he knew his ignorance was a damning indictment of his own willful blindness. "I knew there was friction between Sarah and Elena. I knew Sarah left town abruptly five years ago under a cloud of rumors about financial embezzlement from our family business. Elena told me Sarah fled to Canada to avoid prosecution. I believed her because I wanted to believe the shame was gone."

"Willful blindness is a comfortable defense, Mr. Davis, but in the eyes of the law, it doesn't absolve you of complicity," Vance noted calmly. "Especially since you signed the home improvement permits that accommodated the hidden alcove."

"I signed whatever Elena put in front of me," Arthur admitted bitterly. "She managed the household, the finances, the public relations. I focused on my career, thinking I was providing for my family. I was a coward."

"Well, your children aren't cowards," Vance said, softening his tone slightly. "Leo gave a remarkably coherent statement for a teenager. And little Clara... what she witnessed is going to require extensive therapy. Child Protective Services has placed them in temporary protective custody with your brother in the neighboring county until this investigation stabilizes."

Arthur felt a sharp pain in his chest. "They're being taken away?"

May you like

"For their own safety, yes. The media has already gotten wind of the 'House of Secrets' story. Reporters are swarming the perimeter. You won't be able to stay here, Arthur. The house is evidence."

Arthur nodded slowly, looking around the sterile, expensive dining room that had once felt like a palace and now felt like a prison. "I understand. Just... make sure they're safe."
