Chapter 8: The Anonymous Call

The glow of Maya’s smartphone screen illuminated the darkened kitchen as she dialed the direct number for the county sheriff’s department, bypassing the emergency line to speak directly with an investigator she knew through community board meetings. Clara sat at the kitchen table, her green cardigan pulled tight around her shoulders as she watched Maya with wide, anxious eyes. The dial tone hummed in Maya’s ear for what felt like an eternity before a firm, professional voice answered on the other end. Maya took a deep breath, steadying her voice to ensure she sounded calm and authoritative despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. She knew every word mattered; one misstep could jeopardize the entire operation and tip off a suspect before the net could close.

“This is Maya Lin,” she began, keeping her tone crisp and deliberate. “I need to speak with Detective Vance immediately regarding an ongoing cold case. It concerns the disappearance of Sarah Miller five years ago.” On the other end of the line, the rustling of papers stopped instantly, replaced by absolute, focused attention. Detective Vance’s voice came back sharpened and alert. “Go ahead, Ms. Lin. I’m listening.” Maya glanced over at Clara, who gave a slight, encouraging nod. In concise, factual terms, Maya explained that new, undeniable evidence had just been recovered from a property on Elm Street—evidence that included personal effects belonging to the missing woman and written documentation pointing directly to a specific suspect.

Detective Vance didn't ask unnecessary questions; the mention of Sarah Miller’s personal effects was enough to trigger immediate protocol. “Where is the evidence now, and is the suspect currently on the premises?” the detective asked urgently. Maya explained that the items were securely located at her residence and that the suspect was temporarily away but expected back shortly. “Do not let anyone leave, and do not attempt to confront him yourselves,” Vance commanded, his voice brooking no argument. “I’m dispatching a unit to your location right now. Lock your doors, stay away from the windows, and wait for my officers to knock twice with code red.” The call disconnected with a sharp beep, leaving Maya standing in the quiet kitchen with the heavy reality of what they had just set into motion.
