Chapter 7: Crossing the Threshold

Carrying the heavy black plastic bag between them, Maya and Clara stepped out through the front door of Clara’s house into the deepening dusk of Elm Street. The neighborhood was quiet, most residents settled inside their homes for dinner, illuminated by the warm glow of living room lamps. To any casual observer, they might have looked like two neighbors hauling yard waste or old household items to the curb, but the weight of the bag and the rigid tension in their postures told a different story. Clara kept her head down, her dark reddish hair falling forward to shield her face, while Maya scanned the street with sharp, alert eyes, looking for David’s familiar truck. Every rustle of the autumn leaves in the wind felt like an approaching threat.
They hurried across the pavement separating Clara’s driveway from Maya’s porch, their boots crunching softly on the gravel path. Maya unlocked her front door with trembling fingers, pushing it open wide to allow Clara to slip inside before hauling the heavy bag across the threshold and slamming the door shut behind them. The immediate safety of Maya’s hallway offered a brief respite, and both women let out simultaneous breaths they hadn't realized they were holding. Maya locked the deadbolt, sliding the security chain into place with a definitive click that echoed in the quiet foyer. They had successfully retrieved the evidence, but the hardest part—confronting the legal system and waiting for the fallout—was still ahead of them.
Placing the black bag securely in the corner of Maya’s mudroom, they retreated to the kitchen, where the atmosphere was thick with unresolved tension. Maya poured two glasses of water, handing one to Clara, whose hands were still shaking so badly she could barely hold the glass without spilling it. “He’ll be back soon,” Clara murmured, staring down into the water as if reading tea leaves. “If he checks the yard and sees the disturbance in the dirt, or if he notices the lockbox is missing from its hiding spot, he’ll know immediately.” Maya nodded grimly, pulling up the contacts list on her phone. There was no more time for hesitation; the safety of the entire neighborhood—and their own lives—depended on the call she was about to make to the local authorities.
