Chapter 10: The Descent

The heavy wooden front door swung open to reveal Detective Vance and two uniformed officers standing in the dim light of the porch, their expressions stern and focused. Maya stepped back to let them inside, closing the door quickly behind the last officer to maintain total discretion. Detective Vance, a seasoned investigator with sharp gray eyes and an unyielding demeanor, nodded grimly to Maya before turning his attention to Clara, who sat pale and shaken on the sofa. “Ms. Harper,” Vance said respectfully, stepping into the living room. “Ms. Lin informed me you have something critical to share regarding the Miller investigation. Where is the material?” Clara pointed silently toward the mudroom, where the large black plastic bag sat quietly in the corner.

One of the uniformed officers stepped into the mudroom, retrieving the bag with careful, gloved hands and placing it gently on the coffee table. When the bag was unsealed under the bright overhead light, the contents spilled out onto a protective mat the officers had brought with them: the silver locket, the rusted keys, and the water-damaged leather journals. Detective Vance knelt down, slipping on a pair of latex gloves to pick up one of the journals. As he opened the cover and scanned the handwritten pages inside, the color in his face shifted. He didn't speak for a long moment, reading the agonizing details of a crime that had baffled his department for half a decade. When he finally looked up, his jaw was clenched tight with suppressed fury.

“This is it,” Vance said quietly, his voice carrying the weight of absolute certainty. “David’s handwriting, descriptions of events only the perpetrator could possibly know, and Sarah’s personal effects. This puts him at the center of it all without a shadow of a doubt.” Clara buried her face in her hands, letting out a sob of pure release as the immense burden she had carried in secret finally lifted from her shoulders. Maya placed a comforting hand on her back, feeling her own eyes sting with sympathetic tears. But there was no time to celebrate or mourn; Vance stood up abruptly, checking his watch with sharp efficiency. “We need to move now before he returns home and realizes something is amiss. We’re going to intercept him before he reaches the property.”
